Advice for Choosing Cases

Get a JB case. I recommend a backpack strap version, it takes the weight issue right out of the equation. You also can't find better protection imo. Your cues don't rattle around in hard tubes, plenty of room for all your cues including a jump handle. Optional cue ball storage in lid as well.

I currently own a 3x6 and wish I had gone with a 4x8. But everyone that doesn't have backpack straps on their's wishes they had gotten them when they try mine on.

I'm just rambling now but seriously, you won't contemplate buying another case after a JB, unless you just want another...

I am always surprised to see people complain about the weight of their pool equipment. Do we need caddies in pool? I mean, we don't have to carry our equipment from shot to shot....

I understand for those that have health issues, but I have two blown disks and two bad knees and it's still not an issue I think about.

Anyway, get a JB case. Best solution IMHO.

Whitten 2X4

If ya can find an older one, in good shape, it's allot cheaper than the route you've been lead down. Mine is about 20 years old and still is in good shape. I make sure at least twice a year I apply Lexol to the leather, and I've had one zipper start showing age. Of all the cases I've ever used, it's the one that (like a humidor)makes the wood and the feel of the cue ready to go, and less dried out than ANY other case. I think it's because Whitten spent the time and energy, to understand and talk with the great case makes for woodwind instruments, that also house Stradivarius violins and the alike.

Now that's funny. You want to "buy American", yet the original JB case you bought was made in Germany! LOL I like to buy American-made goods too, when possible. But if the best product is made somewhere else, I'll buy that.

I have an Instroke case from the first year they came out and I still use it daily.
No problems with zippers, latches, the leather, or anything whatsoever.
Highly recommend them.
I don't know much about the made in China JB cases but I hear good things.
For me I don't see the point.
I would love to support 100% American made in my next case and that rules out JB.

I can sympathize, as I also gone through a couple of cases myself. The ones I keep going back to are either my 2x4 It's George or 3x6 Jim Murnak butterfly. Jim can makes many style of cases (cigar, brunswick fishing rod, butterfly). If buying american is one of your criteria, all his cases are handmade out of his Brooklyn New York workshop.
Teamed up with a John Barton case insert, I believe Jim Murnak's butterfly are most practical for my needs.

I have a Joe Porper 2x2 hard case since 08/09 not a single stitch is missing, if I ever upgrade it's gonna be one of these cases.

Save yourself the time and effort - GET A JB RUGGED. Best bang for buck, imhumble opinion of course.

I've run through about 6-7 cases in 8 years, I've changed from one to the next for
various reasons. I'm curious what others have to say about their choice of case and
what they look for when purchasing.

Carrying:
Lambros cue with second shaft and extension
Cuetek Jump cue with handle
Bk2 Break cue with shaft
Cue ball, chalk, other random crap

I started with cheaper hard vinyl cases just to hold cues and quickly came to dislike
some of the cheaper models for durability issues. I went through about 3-4 of
those of various sizes. The vinyl straps would just give way after awhile.

I went to the extreme and went for an Instroke 3x5 which I like, but it's so damn
heavy it started giving me back trouble. Durable as can be but the weight of the
case just made it difficult.

So I switched to the Lucasi soft case 4 x 8, nice weight but couldn't accommodate a
jump handle very well and when the handle strap broke, I got it repaired but wanted
something a little more rugged. got the handle fixed, but needed to move on.

Next went with the Predator Soft case Yellow 3x4, loved this one. perfect size and
pockets held had enough room. I liked this one so much, when the strap broke I got
it repaired twice already. Only dissatisfying part was the quality of where the strap
meets the bag, really terrible design flaw in my opinion.

Not sure what to move to next, I've heard the Black version of the same case doesn't
have the same issues, but Idk if that's just wishful thinking from owners of the black version.

Back with the Lucasi for now.

any suggestions on other cases?
1st of all, get the hands down best case for protection and durability, and that's a JB Rugged. Then after that you can go for all the pretty and frilly your heart desires. Then show off all your cases and most folks will say you got at least one good case in the collection !!!

JB and Whitten are all I would use for cues I care about.

I have never tried but have also heard very good things about Rusty Melton, Dennis Swift, and Chuck Fields (who I don't believe makes cases anymore).

My JB Ultimate Rugged 2X5/3X4 with the lid ball holder is fantastic. My one complaint is that the pockets are not as big as other brands. I've finally added a jump cue and with the handle and extension I'm out of storage space. Q Claw, small towel, chalker, boxes of Masters and Magic chalk, tip tool, contact lenses, eye drops, shaft slicker, burnishing leather, bridge head, hole reinforcers. More than most carry, perhaps, but my past cheapy case had ample room for these.

Yes - I agree with you on wishing the pockets were a bit bigger (although you can order oversized ones - but they look a bit TOO big)
Another issue I think would improve it is if the zipper on the bottom pocket also wrapped around the bottom - instead of just opening on top and one side.*

Other than that - I've been happy with mine so far (only about a month)

* I know John will "customize" just about anything you can think of - but most people going to his website don't want to wait 4-8 weeks for him to "build a custom case".

This is of course not something you know for a fact unless you have tried all cue cases out there.
Just because you're happy with yours doesn't make it the "best case for protection and durability".

You got me there. There are probably a few others who mistakenly worded there opinion about these cases also. I still don't think YOU would be happy with one. Best of luck whatever you choose !!! LOL
