feathering strip problem

Have a 1980 playmaster table which has a more narrow feathering strip groove than normal at least that's what I was told by the guy who is re-clothing the table. Are there smaller feathering strips somewhere out there like evidently there was in 1980 or is the feathering groove going to have to be bored out so the newer 1/4 inch strips will fit in this older table with the cloth?

That's a stupid excuse from your installer, tell him to go buy a block plane and shave the featherstrip down to the size that fits!

I will mention that to the installer, I went and bought flexible feathering strip from Atlas (rubber), was advised to do this from a guy from championship. He said this was ideal when the groove is more narrow, the guy said it can stretch and fit into smaller than normal grooves.

He forgot to mention it also pushes into the featherstrip groove wavy as hell too.

block plain

yes you can use the rubber feather strips but that is not really a good material. any good mechanic, or at least us older guys that have been doing it for 20 - 30 years will have a plain in his tool box and extra feather strips in his van.... what happened to the ones that were already there ?

featherstrip problem

I didn't think to ask what happened to the ones that came out of the table, ouch wish I had waited to buy the rubber feathering strip until I got some of your responses. Maybe I should just look for a more experienced installer.

That sounds like a really good idea to me. It gets real expensive if you have to have the table re-covered twice because the first guy effed it up.

installer

A more expensive installer isnt always the way to choose a mechanic. ask the local players at the pool rooms, the better players will almost always know who the better or best mechanic in the area is. I own a pool room and i am a journeyman mechanic with over 30 years working on tables and i am not the highest priced guy around here... good luck and yes, paying twice because the first guy is incompetent is really to bad.

the sad part this was the guy who was recommended, I may have to expand the search not anyone in the Lacrosse area does this anymore

Tell him to buy a block plane and shave the feather strips down to size, if he still don't understand, then have him call me, 702-927-5689 and I'll walk him through the process of doing it right.

ok will do if I don't end up taking them to Minneapolis and having the rails done there
thanks

Or have him go home and take 10 minutes and make some to fit on his table/band saw from an actual board.
