Learn with an aiming system or not

I put the odds of the op listening to what I say at close to zero but here goes.

Keep playing until you figure out how to aim. Hint: when you are spinning the cue ball you have to adjust your aim so your high powered "system" won't be worth a flying fu..flamingo.

Keep playing until you figure out how to aim. I recommend equal offense.

I agree with this 100%. If you have a high powered aiming system that does not facilitate the visual "how to" and most of the time the precise " what to do" with the vision for spin.....I'd toss it!

I did find a book called On Snooker but it was by Mordecai Richler and while it did contain many mentions of Joe Davis, nothing that I read indicated a ghost ball method of aiming.

Do you have a link or a photo of the page which details Joe Davis's method of aiming?

Thanks,
JoeyA

The Ghost ball method I learned with came from the Joe Davis book "On Snooker".

He taught me the area method of aiming. By that he meant the Area of the object ball that is eclipsed by the Ghost ball. It gives you a very large target to aim at and is easy to teach.

It works well for me and most would agree that I pocket balls very well.

The main thing I like about it is that it is simple. No Pivots? No edges? no other needless adjustments. Just look at the area and shoot.

Forget about aiming systems lol...how do they account for english...deflection...swerve...throw? Pool is not played with center ball.

It's accounted for just like folks who don't "aim", it has to be factored in. Nobody said otherwise.

Lets go talk with Darren Appleton, who I'm pretty sure he can beat anyone's brains in on AZB, and he still uses the "ghost ball" aiming on long cut shots, and he blames losing a major tourney recently because he rushed and didn't use his aiming method. If it works for him, then great. If others don't need to use something to help, even better for them. Not everyone has the same method to their madness and most likely nobody ever will.

weird, a champion, professional player using such non sense. Hmmmmmm

I believe it was Allison Fisher who said "Aim for the spot on the object ball that is farthest away from the pocket." Always made sense to me in it's simplicity and that's pretty much the way I aim.

Love Allison, but thats not totally accurate.....I assume she was just identifying the contact point...and making a point not to endorse complicated aiming systems.....

(but you dont aim directly at the contact point unless you are straight in, as of course you know)

No I really do. If I adjust it is done subconsciously from hitting so many balls over time and I am not even aware of it. Simplicity works best for me at the table. Know where I want to get to and how I will do it then think of nothing but finding the contact point on the object ball.

Lol ghost ball.

Yeah, laugh at Darren next time he stops by your poolhall, I''m sure he'll play a little for some cash, he'll use ghost ball, and you use whatever you want. guess who will win, every time. Here's a hint, it won't be you. lol

Of course I'd play him lol...and straight...what are you guys afraid to play "pros" ?

Yeah, I'm sure you'd play him a race to 9 for $20. Man, you do have some balls, I'll give you that. lol

But play a guy a race to 10 for $5K, a guy who admits to using ghost ball, and you'd pee your pants :)

First of all people spot games not balls. Secondly no I would not take games...that's insulting. Oh spot him a few? Am I drunk? If so I probably would just to wind him up.

WOW, you must be a real player, because you want to play pro's, you know everything there is to know about aiming, and then to top it off, you know that folks NEVER spot balls, just games. Yep, you're the real deal alright, lol
