Modern 8 Ball: Deterioration or Evolution?

Stop worrying about my ban. Yeah I was banned and I couldn't create any new username until it was lifted.

I find myself referencing forum rules again, oh the irony...

I believe you will find that your "ban" hasn't been lifted. It usually takes a very special sort of "ban" to get an entire thread deleted, and those folks tend to capture Mr. Wilson's attention rather easily.

In the extremely unlikely chance that you are not one of those folks who know how this works, here you go. Sometimes a person will come on here, and make threads/posts in such a manner that he/she gets themselves banned. Then they find that they are having fun trolling, poking fun and stirring stuff up. So they go and create a different user name, and start over again. Usually, they become quite obvious, and we have a game of spot the troll for a while.

Now I could be entirely wrong, and the mods who banned you previously have changed their minds. I suppose anything is possible. We shall see, over the course of the day.

It's the quality comparison of the official and public system.

There is no public system. You wrote a short book, that does not make it gospel. The question I asked you before still applies, and you continue to skirt it. But it is also the core of why there are no "official bar rules".

Writing that much material as a joke would just take too much effort so you must be serious about this idea. People on here have done their best to explain already why these rules and your terminology will not work. You ignore them.

Ahhh... I didn't know the guy was banned. I searched his user posts looking for the "guide" from last week and didbt find it. But his ideas are so far fetched that I thought it has to be the same guy.

Id like to play you a set, OP. We will break the balls, and then I will play by my own personal house rules and sweep all my stripes in with the side of my stick. Then, when I go to put my score up on the bar room chalk board, I will give myself credit for 5 games instead of 1, and win our race to 5.

I like playing by my house rules!

Maybe the 8 ball isn't as popular here, but it's far the most widely spread type of pool in the world. If you don't like public rules, nobody says you should play that way. And I'm just as serious player as any of you out there so stop calling my posts a joke. If you disagree with them, at least give some logical reasons. God...

There are no "public rules", that's the problem with bar room play, one of them, at least. The rules, especially for bar room 8 ball vary from bar to bar, state to state, and region to region. And, I don't believe I called your post "a joke". I've read some of your other posts, so sorry, no. You said you did research on AZ if I remember correctly but your "findings" don't indicate it.

...OK, let's put it this way. We'll compare the development of 8 Ball to the development of world languages through history. First international language was Latin (WSR system)...

Again, check your research. The WPA wasn't even formed until 1987. I could be wrong since I haven't done the extensive research you obviously have (), but I do believe there are probably rule sets that predate the World Standardized Rules.

Ooo he's unbanned, too bad, I thought all this was behind us.

I showed this "guide" to some friends they were pretty much speechless. I mean the thing has something like 4 pages on different conditions on when you can move move balls around at random during a game.

The best quote was from my 12 year old son after he read a bit.

He said "These rules sound like the rules I made up when I was 8 so I could win".

This guy was already shown many times why what he wrote was junk. Just like any 5 yr old you try to reason with, he just ignores the comments except maybe one or two quotes that are irrelevant that he can try to rebuke. By his reasoning, if 90 people out of 100 are bad at math, we need to re-write the math to make it easier for them, not try to get them to learn how to do proper math. If 70 out of 100 can't name all the states, we should remove the ones they can't remember. If people just can't seem to get the hang of traffic laws, lets remove some, I mean who needs Stop signs, it just confuses people. Red light? Optional to stop, unless you are a pro driver.

Let me answer you politely and logically. Your view is actually quite a bit more common than most people here would like to think. It isn’t that “the way pool is played in bars is different than the way it is played in pool halls” it is not “different” it is inferior. It isn’t that the way they play chess in coffee houses and parks is “different” than the way they play chess at the chess club, it isn’t the way they play basketball in the NBA is “different” than the way they play basketball in the local playground, it isn’t that they play poker “differently” in the living room than they do on TV. I could give 100 more examples if you wish but I trust you get my point.

This is actually an enormous widespread misconception that the inferior players would like to believe. It is very humbling to get wiped out by a great pool player when they come into a bar and play “bar rules” and people don’t like to be humbled; people will dupe themselves into thinking “oh we can make up rules so that it is harder for the better player to win.” Well this is also a fallacy, it can’t be done. If the player is good enough he can use these “bar rules” to his advantage and win the same number of games that he would win by any other rules. The average game takes longer but the result is the same.

You may be asking yourself “So why is it that it seems as though these rules even out the playing field so much? I know I have seen it in action.” Many reasons but here are the 2 major ones. 1) The skill level of the players that play by these rules; this is usually very low. 2) The concentration level of the tournament player that is playing in this environment; this is also usually very low.

About #2 you may say “well why is that?” it is because in order to become better (like most things) pool needs to be played with people that are as good or better than you are. That is why a “world beater” has never “emerged from his basement”. The tournament player knows that no matter what he is going to win the majority of the games so it matters less to him, unless he has a huge ego (and I have seen that to), and in those cases I have seen this tournament player “bear down” against these social players.

That is where all the “urban legends” come from you know “there was a guy who came in here that must have been a world champ or something because he literally didn’t miss a shot all night” no that was just a strong tournament player with a huge ego that just didn’t feel like losing a game all night and actually had high focus against people that don’t really know much about pool.

I know this because I played “bar pool” for the first couple of years that I played, I remember very well knowing nothing at all and thinking that “I had figured a lot out” After my 1st couple of years of play I thought I was “pretty good”; but like most things that are life-long studies (of which pool is one) the more you learn the more you realize that the body of knowledge that encompasses it is far larger than you realized initially.

I like to explain it with a philosophical little play on words that explains the difference between the levels at any given skill that is a life long study.

1. You don’t know what you don’t know
2. You don’t know what you know
3. You know what you know
4. You know what you don’t know

These are the stages that a person goes through 1 is the beginner and 4 is on their way to the mastery of the skill in question. The majority of the players that you are talking with and playing with are still at stage 1 or 2 and most of the people here are at stage 3 or 4. The majority of the people here can go to bars and play by bar rules and wipe everybody out all night, that is hard to swallow believe me I know I have been there and there was a time when I thought EXACTLY as you do now but I have just gone past that.

All I can tell you is that it takes some solid years of study to know this. If you studied the game you would to; the conflict with that in your mind is “well I am not trying to be a pro” a pro isn’t a person that has his own equipment and plays in tournaments with tournament rules NO that’s just a good pool player; a pro is someone that plays pool for a living. In order to understand you will have to do research on “the other side”.

Your actions are petty and vindictive.

You have been banned many times and continue to reappear with the same M.O.

Why do you keep coming back Brags?!
I thought you were banned also!

Posting messages under banned names has resulted in banning of the existing member too.

Your continued use of brags' handle is a straight up middle finger to us each and to the Board as well.

Right back at you, loser!

I apologize for my transgressions.
