Should Earl be in the 2017 Mosconi Cup?

Should Earl be in the 2017 Mosconi Cup

  • Total voters
    223
  • Poll closed .
The commentators didn't know that the "fix" was in, and consequently were in the dark. Earl refused to participate in the sham (and his behavior was very pointed)...so did Shane...but Shane's not one to speak out much. The other three...not so much. THEY were the disgrace.

This is definitely the stone-cold truth.

BAM. Game, Set & Match. No further witnesses are called. Please see Exhibit A. JAM and I officially "rest our case".

I hope Matchroom does the right thing. It will be fun to see Earl in Vegas this year. I can't wait!

Lots of responses to this poll....all things Earl gets attention.
Earl is still a pool icon.
He is like an open book....everybody knows how he feels.

I've said before, I consider Earl our Van Gogh....and I like him 86% of the time....
...but the game would be far poorer without him.

Earl's worth far outweighs his faults.

Hear, hear! Earl Strickland for Team USA at 2017 Mosconi Cup!

Maybe I'll get another photo opp with Earl, 12 years later. :grin-square:

I did some more digging on this Mosconi Cup question.

39 players have competed for Team USA in the 23 Cups played so far (1994-2016).

26 of the players have made only 1 or 2 appearances in the Cup. In terms of the winning percentage for the matches in which they were involved, 6 of those 26 players have higher percentages than Earl.

13 of the players have appeared at least 3 times, and Earl is the highest among those 13. Seven of those 13 have been on the winning side of at least half the matches in which they were involved:

  • Earl Strickland (14 appearances) -- 43-26 (winning percentage of 62%)
    Kim Davenport (3 appearances) -- 9-6 (60%)
    Corey Deuel (9 appearances) -- 27-20 (57%)
    Charlie Williams (5 appearances) -- 12-9 (57%)
    Johnny Archer (17 appearances) -- 50-41 (55%)
    Jeremy Jones (7 appearances) -- 17-17 (50%)
    Jim Rempe (3 appearances) -- 7-7 (50%)

The other 6 players who have at least 3 appearances are below 50%:

  • Dennis Hatch (4 appearances) -- 11-12 (48%)
    Rodney Morris (10 appearances) -- 27-30 (47%)
    Nick Varner (4 appearances) -- 8-11 (42%)
    Shane Van Boening (10 appearances) -- 25-35 (42%)
    Justin Bergman (3 appearances) -- 6-10 (38%)
    Mike Dechaine (4 appearances) -- 5-16 (24%)

Note that the order might be a bit different using the other measure I like to post -- the numerical contribution each player has made to the overall Mosconi Cup match scores (counting a full point in a singles win or loss, half a point in a doubles win or loss, etc.). I'll add that at some point. ...

Here's the additional information I mentioned above, shown for the same 13 players, i.e., those who have appeared in at least 3 Cups.

This way of looking at the records counts a full point for each player in a singles win or loss, a half a point for each player in a doubles win or loss, a third of a point for each player in a trebles (played only in 2006) win or loss, and one-fifth of a point (one-sixth in 2006 when the teams had 6 players) for each player in a team win or loss. So the following numbers essentially answer the question: "What numerical contribution has each player made to the overall Mosconi Cup match scores?"

  • Davenport (3 years)-- 7.0 - 3.5 (winning percentage of 67%)
    Williams (5 years) -- 9.0 - 5.5 (62%)
    Strickland (14 years) -- 27.2 - 18.4 (60%)
    Archer (17 years) -- 31.8 - 25.6 (55%)
    Deuel (9 years) -- 15.1 - 12.4 (55%)
    Jones (7 years) -- 12.0 - 11.7 (51%)
    Hatch (4 years) -- 6.9 - 6.9 (50%)
    Morris (10 years) -- 17.2 - 17.5 (50%)
    Rempe (3 years) -- 4.5 - 5.0 (47%)
    Varner (4 years) -- 5.5 - 7.5 (42%)
    Van Boening (10 years) -- 16.3 - 23.2 (41%)
    Bergman (3 years) -- 3.2 - 6.9 (32%)
    Dechaine (4 years) -- 2.4 - 10.4 (19%)

So the order did change using this measure, and Earl drops to third instead of first. (Of course, if you want to count just the 6 players who have appeared in more than 5 Cups, then Earl is first on this measure, too.)

USA, all the way!

USA, Earl must play!

Thanks for the levity in what has turned out to be a vitriolic, hate-filled thread. :)

Jen, on this we're going to disagree....it's been a great thread.
...might've set a record on how many people answered a poll.
And Earl is ahead by two votes......so he isn't getting crucified.

If we all agreed, there'd be nothing to talk about....dissension can be healthy, also.
...I give to you a Yiddish proverb...
"If everybody pulled the same way, the whole world would topple over."

I agree with that. :)

I can understand pulling against a player you don't like, but some of the comments in the two threads have been over the top, IMO.

May be time to take a break from AzB again. Too much negativity here.

Believe it or not, I do love pool. I can't play, can't run a rack anymore, unless it's a Mickey Mouse rack, but I know pool well. It's been a big part of my life since I was a teenager. I'm 63 now. That's a long f-ing time. :grin-square:

I just want to enjoy pool. Here on AzBilliards, which is a pool forum, it's hard to enjoy pool.

Ugh. The natural progression of a JAM thread:

1. States opinion
2. Tells anyone with a dissenting opinion how wrong they are.
3. Starts calling people 'knockers'.
4. Restates opinion. Maybe while insulting non-'muricans
5. Starts calling people 'trolls'.
6. Gets a bunch of support from a few members.
7. Restates opinion tons of times. Probably in larger, colored font.
8. Calls more people 'trolls'.
9. Claims there is hate on AZ, threatens to go back to SafeBook.

How cute! A troll stops by to spew words behind the protection of his computer screen. :grin-square:

Add that to your list, Pal. :)

ETA: "Banned member posting," not troll. Pappasaun's join date -->January 2017.

When I was 15, my granpappy told me that if I run into a jerk once in a while, that was to be expected. If I run into a few jerks in a week, that was bad luck. If I ran into jerks every day, maybe I was the jerk.
