Pocket Billiards Terms

All of those terms are for gambling and have nothing to do with playing a real game of competitive pocket billiards.

Why has gambling become synonymous with Pool?

No wonder City Councils do not want a "Pool Hall" in their cities.

Well I guess how I read your post I would answer this way: In competitive pocket billiards in order to be "competitive" sometimes you have to make it a more fair game. If a player is not as good as another he would receive what we call (weight, spots, and wire games) to make it a more fair game. So lesser players can have a chance whether it be in a tournament, league, or gambling. Is that what you are asking?

Read, think, comprehend, think again, consider options, think again, answer.

You're kidding, right? Read what you wrote. You think playing pool for money is not competitive? I take it you've only been around pool less than a year?

And what makes you think that gambling has nothing to do with "competitive pocket billiards"?

The gambling matches between Shane and Alex were pretty "competitive", don't you agree? And I think they somehow involved "pocket billiards", right?

Quit being coy. If you want to make a point, then just say it. If your point is that you don't like gambling, great. End of thread.

Skins is a term for gambling on golf. There is an organized, sanctioned, professional Skins Game played by the top golfers in the world. Is gambling also synonymous with golf? Depends who you ask, but do City Councils not want golf courses in their cities?

I suggest you take your fight to City Hall. You ain't going to win it here.

In the middle 50s, golf got a big boost from calcutta tournaments in Nevada.

Wire.
Weight.

Straight Up.

I can't find references to these terms anywhere in any of the rule books from any of the associations.

Could someone help me understand what these terms have to do with playing competitive pocket billiards?

Thank You

Here's a few more terms you might hear playing COMPETITIVE pocket billiards.

Many of these terms are used if gambling for money... should you need to know.
There's no way to be more "competitive" playing pool than when it's your money.

Mister, you got that right.
Lots of players can shoot 'lights out' when they've got a stakehorse.
But if it's the grocery money or that stash that was being saved to "take wife on a cruise".....then they turn into mush.
Somebody on this forum has one of those signature lines that reads: "Pool may not build character, but it will sure reveal it if any is there". (something like that)
Keep on truckin'

They're handicapping terms, and and they have everything to do with competitive pocket billiards in that without handicapping most small local and regional tournaments would be non-competive for the majority of players and would eventually dissolve due to lack of participants.

Why would organizations that don't sanction handicapped events define handicapping terms within their rule books?

Check with the APA or BCAPL.

Hey mchnhed,

the other day I played in a tourney that was a double elimination race to 5 no handicap, meaning no spot just straight up. After the break in the fourth game I had to jump over a ball to make the one so I put a weight in the but of my cue and continued to run out and then moved my bead over on wire for the win.

now if you read, think, comprehend, think again, consider options, think again, answer you might get it Ahole.
