Pocket Billiards Terms

Finally the correct answer.....Nothing.
Those terms are gambling terms used when betting on Pool,
but they are not terms used in playing a game of Pool.

And....... I'll bet a Dollar that someone will answer back instead of just letting this awful thread die from lack of,responses.

Annnnd, in the bin you go, my dear!

So you're okay with wagering when the odds are stacked heavily in your favor?
That isn't gambling.

It's all starting to make sense.

Pool terms...

A serious question....how many players are familiar with or have heard of referring to area above the head string as "the grass" rather than "the kitchen"...??
In the late 50's - 60's, that was the terminology here in the Eastern Panhandle of WV...not sure when it actually changed or why...??

In my area, we just called a ball in the kitchen 'behind the line'....
...the oldtimers called it 'in balk'.
'The kitchen' seems to be a recent term...never heard it till the 90s....
...maybe a league thing?

The term "kitchen" is still in some sets of rules (e.g., the CSI -- BCAPL & USAPL rules) but not in the current WPA (world-standardized) rules. There, it's referred to as just "behind the head string" or, in their Parts of the Table diagram, as the "Area Behind the Head String."

I can't find references to these terms anywhere in any of the rule books from any of the associations.

Could someone help me understand what these terms have to do with playing competitive pocket billiards?

Thank You

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the actual history of "pocket billiards".

Pocket billiards IS pool. Pool is a term for billiard games designed to allow multiple players, (more than just two) that all place wagers or an ante to join in on the game.

Every modern pocket billiards game we play came from gambling games. Gambling is basically the reason why there are 15 balls in a rack . Gambling is why we play 9ball, and all tournaments that require an entry fee are in fact large pools.

Gambling is not a black eye to pocket billiards, its the back room jackass drugs, crime and general phuckery that degenerate players engage in that gives pool a black eye.

That being said, ALL professional sports suffer from the same problems, they simple have enough glam and glitz for most fans to overlook it all.

Know your history.....

The word "pool" means a collective bet, or ante. Many non-billiard games, such as poker, involve a pool but it was to pocket billiards that the name became attached. The term "poolroom" now means a place where pool is played, but in the 19th century a poolroom was a betting parlor for horse racing. Pool tables were installed so patrons could pass time between races. The two became connected in the public mind, but the unsavory connotation of "poolroom" came from the betting that took place there, not from billiards.

And before that from the 1880's to the 1920's Billiards was a respected Gentleman's past time. It wasn't until Proabition when Gansters and their type ruined everything, much like today.

I'm calling bullshit....gambling has been around this game since it was played on a lawn.
A French Cardinal was the first monster go-off in the Middle Ages...one of the better
know hustlers back then became a bishop.

George Washington kept track of his billiard winnings.

I don't think this game would have reached the heights it has in talent and knowledge
without it being competitive....and that involves gamblers looking for an edge.

Sure, there is always those kind of people in all walks of life.
Yes, there are those who can't breath without the fix of making a bet.
But the majority of people do not lean that way.

You make it sound like gambling goes on in every event known to man.
Notice I said "in the event" not "on the event".

Place your bets.......
The Olympics, especially the The Special Olympics
Figure Skating
Church Bake Sales
Professional Wrestling
Bingo Games
Soapbox Derby Car Races
Movie Box Office Receipts
??????

Addicts are always trying to say.....
Everyone is doing it.
It improves what I do.
It's not harming anyone.

I'm not sure how this reasoning helps your cause.

Personally, I got no problem with people that don't gamble...quite a few of my friends don't.
...but I got a problem with people that don't gamble complaining about gambling.
I gamble with gamblers...you don't like gambling, don't gamble.

I love to gamble.
I bet I'm going to lose.

But widdel mikey doesnt fit in. He wants to play withthe cool kids, but a lack of common sense and and confidence leave him only able to attack that which he sees.

Ah, back to the glib...
...check out Malcom Gladwell, and why Von Braun got the job.

You use words to poke people...the most value you'll get on this forum involves sharing.
