I had this shot last night to go from the 3-Ball to the 4-Ball and with the lay of the land I decided to reach and just hit it with a high ball, some follow. Instead of going downtable to where the black CB is (where I thought it would go) it just sort of died off the rail and came out and stopped about where the white CB is.

Why didn't it follow on down the table, why did it just die coming off the end rail? Was it because the follow didn't have time to take affect? Or because I was so close to the 3-Ball and hit it sort of hard that I actually hit it with stun and not follow?

NOTE: The angle of the shot might not be exactly perfect but you get the idea. It was close to straight in, just a slight cut to the left and I had to reach to get to the CB.

Think about which direction the cue ball is spinning.

When you pocket an object ball that is close to the rail as such (a relatively thick hit), the spin on the cb wants to drive it back into the end rail even after initial contact with the rail. To combat this and be able to get whitey back down table, hit lower on the cb and cut the ob as thin as you can to still safely pocket the ball. As the thickness of the hit on the object ball decreases, this effect of the top spin lessens.
 
Why high inside? Best route from the 3b to the 4b is a touch of outside (natural) and 2-rails for shape.

Unless you stroke it properly, hi inside is "check english", which is what happened.

You "checked" or "killed" whitey.

Since you were stretched, you probably poked the CB a little.

I suggest practicing 2-rail shape on this shot.

Looks a bit too straight to go 2 rails with r)...at leas without forcing an angle and really mashing it.

I think the prudent choice is as he attempted.

You're right!

I just set this up on my 9ft Diamond Pro and it's much straighter than the diagram looked. Maybe the dotted lines threw me off.

Anyhoo, one rail and down for shape is the easiest.

OP, after many tries I was able to replicate your results - it required a really bad stroke! :-)

I had to poke at the CB. This is common when players are uncomfortable during a shot, especially when stretching.

When you have an object ball near a rail and you use a lot of high, the spin fights against the rebound and you get much less distance than you think.
 
Did you try the shot a few times more afterwards? You either didn't hit it the way you intended, or, your knowledge of how to hit it was not correct. You will know the answer in a few minutes of repeating the shot:)

Yup, high inside causes the CB to check off of the rail.
