One Pocket Lessons From The Greatest

For anyone reading this that doesn't know, when you hear the old stories about the champion Tom Tom....... this is him! I would absolutely LOVE to have seen Tom Tom and Geese ply each other both in their primes. That would be epic!!!

Tom is a great guy and player. I always make it a priority to see Tom whenever I get into town. I wish I knew Tom 25 or 30 years ago, my 1P would be much better.

Hung out with him all the time but hated 1pckt

Most of you have said the most important thing, he's a great person! Anybody, given the chance should spend time with him.

Great thread Dean

Have you ever played a guy one pocket and every time you come to the table
there is just nothing to shoot, nothing easy anyway.

Or you finally have your opponent in a spot,it looks like he just has to leave you something
and all of a sudden he hits one ball into a bunch and the cue ball floats
behind a ball you didn't even know was there?

Well Tom teaches you which shot to shoot when and why.
Plus he teaches in a practical way.

Tom might shoot one shot, but its not the right shot for me
Why?
Because I haven't practiced the shot, because it is low % for a person of my skill
set,

When you step up to the table and all you can think is safety, the battle is halfway over
you lost!

Sometimes there is opportunity in a desperate looking situation.

these are the type of things you will learn from Tom.

This is not a "Don't eat yellow snow basics for beginners unless that is what you need

I have never played

I need about 6 guys who can commit to a day in April so we can get Tom down here.

Disclaimer

Tom said Billy Incardona down here know as much as he does

Tom would not like to be seen as someone claiming to be a genius

Billy is sharp, but Billy isn't giving lessons,Billy matches up and what you learn from him cost a lot more than $500 and leaves you wondering what happened. I know from sad experience.

Please for give me for the constant posting. I'm enjoying this thread.

Tom should be in the 1P Hall of Fame for his contributions to the game and his book. He has beaten the best of the best. He made his statement. He can still play...might not be able to endure all day and night but he can still dazzle.

As an instructor. His interest is to teach 1P...not stroke.

My first lesson.... he asked what I wanted to learn and where to start. I replied I have no idea how to play or where to start. We started with take outs...drills and banking tracks. During each session he'd explain about the table being 4 quadrants...to move balls into my quadrant...put a ball on the long rail, the short rail, in front of my pocket and PROTECT them. When the elements for a trap are there...set the trap. The Mitt is your best friend. Always talked about risk-reward...playing for running balls not one and done. Be aggressive and control it. Look for 3 shots and take the best option. Know where the cue is going each and every time....don't just do something to do it. If stuck to think my way through it. Where do I want the cue...where is the safest place on the table...how do I get there.

Learning from Tom is an experience...and a great one unlike any other instructor. As a beginner he is perfect for me. At this point I'll call myself an advanced beginner. I play 1P with a very good 9ball'r. He can give me the breaks 8/9 and eat me up. In 1P I feel confident and hold my own very well with him. I could give him ball right now.
I play for fun but stay serious. I do not compete/gamble but if I did Tom would be my coach aside from instructor. There are Michael Jordan's and Dr. J's. And there is Tom Wirth....and he is in a league of his own. And it's a major one.

here is a guy who couldn't spell one pocket until he met
Tom
Now listen to him and notice
1 He talks about basic strategy as if he were a veteran
2 he has obviously developed a love for the game
he just gushes enthusiasm

3 Listen to what he says about Tom and his teaching

Do you think he wants his money back?
The guy knows he has been introduced to the thinking mans game

and he oozes with enthusiasm

You guys know i love one pocket, its all I play

You think I would know it all after 50 years
actually I am known for understanding the game

I beat people who could give me the orange crush at 9 ball

But when I first became acquainted with Tom Wirth
I realized how little I knew it thrilled me!

I saw him talk about the catchers MIT and suddenly I saw avenues to turn games around

when I saw him take desperate positions and not just get out of the shot safe ,but to put pressure on my opponent

It's funny, you think you know the game
and you find out that you are not that sharp

If you are not ashamed to take instruction,
if your game is with $500 to begin with

and you are willing to bring a teachable spirit to Dallas for a

Day of fun and learning, you just might become a good player,or better player over night

contact me guarantee your self a spot when Tom comes to Dallas

Why do you think Mark Griffin is paying Tom to come to
the national one pocket tournament to put on an exhibition?

Mark is not stupid*,he knows what Tom can do to help pool

* aside from not backing me to play in the championship, but that is
a different subject altogether

you have to be joking

$500 for instruction on that game, one pocket, PLEASE. You can shoot
any ball on the table, your target is already decided, and you don't
even have to call how you are going to make it. In 8 ball you have
to figure out which ball to shoot and which pocket to shoot it in, for
crying out loud, and on top of all that if your opponent gets a ball close
to his pocket you knock it away. Talk about dirty chicken---- pool,
that takes the cake. You wouldn't do that crap but once in Steves Club
buster. That game is for beginners, and sissy's. Count me out I'll stick
to real man's pool.

JACKPOT IS SPOOFING ME

i have known jack for 50 years,he was the best player in our area at age 14 was a 9 ball player
who never seemed to like one pocket as a kid,and felt awkward playing safe

he loved making balls, shooting straight, and he was the best young player
i ever saw

He ran around with all the great players at the time

Billy Stroud,Alfie Taylor and Jack Potter were friends

Jack made the libra cues that so many of you want today

I played one pocket because I liked pool but I couldn't shoot straight
Jack and i won lots of money together ever since we were kids

We played golf,pool,baseball,you name it

jack tells me he wants to learn one pocket now
it will take a miracle since he shoots at his hole on every shot
Tom,might help him
but i am afraid to include jack because he might drive tom crazy

He played so bad he was reduced to betting on me
he just couldn't stand seeing me bet hundreds even thousands and
I couldn't even make a spot shot

He explained it to me. I don't care if you win thousands,it gives me ulcers to
bet my money on a guy that is not even money to make any shot on the table

"just when i begin to count my money, you sell out" says Jack

Jack had all the heart in the world as a player, but what a dog he was as a backer

He was always pulling up when I thought i had the nuts. He said"there is no such thing as the nuts when you
might miss any shot on the table at any time

Enjoy his post,he makes me laugh

I love his sense of humor

It's time to go to school. But I would suggest that Jack learns 1P from a video or match pack (learn in your spare time)...don't get involved with Tom.
It starts with one lesson then two..then you bring Tom back or go to Florida. Because Tom is a great person and approachable Jack might call him to discuss situations. The phone bill goes up...it gets ugly.

My last post here for now....have some things to do and then I'm playing 1p all afternoon. As per Tom...I will play slow and steady...build momentum...turn defense into offense and get off to the races. OnePocket...gotta love it. It's a game in game. It's adrenaline. 1p is not everything but it beats any game in second place.
