What is this cue? It sold much higher than I expected.

The cue is identical to a Gandy HC-145 except for the long butt cap. As far as I am concerned it is a Gandy HC-145.

I figure either the butt cap was replaced ot this was an early Gandy or even perhaps the National version of the same cue. Butt cap length did vary a little on these as far as I am aware. Likely an early versus later model version.

I have an HC-145, with two original shafts. They came with two shafts. Mine has a slightly longer butt cap than the one posted on classiccues. This thing on Ebay has no shafts and sells for over $500?

Does somebody know something about this that makes it so special? Or should I sell may put my Gandy up for sale for $700-$800? LOL!

When I was at Ft Polk in 73, we used to go up to Shreveport once in a while and I bought a Gandy cue in a room there. I think I paid 75.00 ( used ) for it. If I recall correctly, it was branded as a "National Tournament" cue. It was beautiful. But it was too heavy for me ( 21.5 oz ) so I sold it a few years later. Solid as a rock though. And MAN, was it pretty.

I have an interest in Gandy and National cues.

Do you remember if yours had the aluminum insert? I believe it would in 73.

Later Gandy cues were made by Viking. I believe Viking made Gandy cues for about 10 years. They had a brass insert and the classic Viking "mushroom" bumper. Some of the same models were produced and then they went on to produce what were essentially variations on Viking designs.

Possibly the unknown factor, someone thought they might be sniping something. A lot of people dont do much homework on things they think they know a lot about. I remember when I paid to much for a lot of things just because I thought they were cool. Now, even if you steal something you're hard pressed to profit 10% after the hassle and all the fees incurred most places.

Man, there's been a LOT of incest among cue-makers. I don't remember if it had the alum insert or not. My time was almost up when I bought it and when I got back home, I bought a Rambow and never played with the Gandy again. But it was so pretty, I didn't want to sell it. I ended up selling it anyway a few years down the road. I wish I still had it, actually. I was just a kid and didn't know I could get the weight adjusted. I've beat myself up a few times over selling it. I shoulda kept it. But then... I shoulda kept that Rambow too. But I sold it back to the guy I bought it from.

I really think that's what happened here.

Surely a nice cue. Surely a nice example in what looks to be pretty decent condition.

But missing 2 shafts, you can get them made, but it will never be original again unless you track down original shafts. Good luck on that one.

Even with the original 2 shafts it isn't worth nearly that much. I would guess more like $350 with two original shafts. They offered snooker and billiard shafts as well, so with a whole original package with the two original shafts plus the two optional shafts, you get into the price range this butt sold for.

I do think somebody though it was something it is not.

Well... honestly? I wish I knew. I've been searching for info about the maker for many years with no success. I bought it in 78 from the owner of a room here, a guy named Bob ( Krazy Kue Billiards in Pinellas Park Fl ) who was originally from Baltimore. According to Bob, Matty ( the maker ) made the cue for Rich Riggi. Riggi hit a few balls with it and didn't like it so Bob ( just a kid at the time ), piped up "I'll buy it!" So, he had it for a long time before I bought it from him. It hits balls better than any cue I've ever had, since that Rambow. I can't believe a cue this nice was made by someone nobody has ever heard of before, especially from that far back when there were relatively very few cue makers. C'st la vie, I suppose. I asked Bob about it once but he didn't know much about the guy, other than he made cues and was from that general area.

Funny story about it... Ray Martin used to come into our room all the time when he lived in Largo ( next city immediately south of Clearwater ). I was playing on the front table by the counter and was taking a break, sitting down sipping a Coke and Ray walks by, glances at the cue on the table and says to me "That cue's older than you."

I said... "I know, Ray. It's almost older than you!" :grin-square:

It's a Gandy/National/Cervantes cue.

Roughly 69 to 72 time frame probably.

Definitely not Rich.

There was a similar Rich model...but different enough that you can tell right away.

Sounds like a plan, CD. I've been meaning to for a while now and just never really thought about it at the right time. I'll have to get my kid to take a few photos of it and see if I can figger out how to upload them here.

And I am up in Palm Coast. I do sometimes get down that way. Maybe I can get my eyes on it if I get down there some time and have time to stop. Often when I am around other parts of the state I have no time to stop because I am volunteering and on a schedule. If I plan ahead and have time to stop I would love to see it.

I've been up in your neck of the woods a few times. One of my ex's is in Palm Coast. She used to work at a club on Flagler Beach.

You got that right-I thought when knives started being outsourced to China in bunches-I'd buy a bunch of American Made $70-$120 knives and in a few years make a killing- Im still waiting-sold about 10 and made a profit on ONE. Now they sit -probably 250 Bucks, Sogs and Spydercos that my heirs will have to deal with. Lesson learned.

Most of them were probably 45-$70 but i paid $250 and up for a dozen or so. Thankfully I had one KILLER year in the stock market and made a bunch last year on the Cryptos so way more than enough to offset the knife disaster. And if i ever have to- i can get back 80-90% of the knife money selling them one at a time on Ebay based on what i got for the 10 or so that i sold.
