What to specify when ordering a custom cue?

Best suggestion and outcome is to go to the Expo or other major pool event and purchase from a vendor what you like and is in stock!!!

If still want custom! Then purchase from the local cue makers only! People in your community and ones that you are familiar with. I do business primarily with the people I know and stay away from strangers.

Even though a cue is custom, alot of cuemakers have some constants they don`t really want to change. Typical things can be:
- joint diameter.
- butt diameter.
- shaft and butt taper.
- joint pin.
Construction methods can be specific to a cuemaker based on what he or she feels is best and part of their "signature" Some only make full length core cues, some will use metal in the A joint, some will only use phenolic or wood, some will not use ivory in their cues. Ferrule materials, length and construction might not be negotiable either.
It`s not becuase the builder is a d**k, but the way their equipment is set up. Dialing in you lathe, tapering setup etc. can take alot of time, why mess with a setup that is perfect.
This for the most part really isn`t a issue as most pool cues share fairly similar measurements, shafts is usually between 12 and 13mm, joint collar is usually about .840" ish and butt diameter is about 1.25" some go a little thinner, some go a little thicker, but not by much. You can read until your blue in the face about different joint pins, pilot vs flat faced etc, but if it`s done right they all will feel like one piece of wood.
The same can be said for ferrules, I don`t think you ever will find a consensus on threaded vs untreaded, capped vs tube, tennon size, thread pitch, ferrule material etc.
Most makes their cues around 17-21oz, the avereage will be just around 19, maybe slightly lighter.
Very light cues present the maker with more limitations in woods and materials used, heavier than 21oz certainly isn`t a problem if you use dense woods, but a heavy cue can feel sluggish.

I hope this helps.

I will give you 2 cue makers that you can trust
not only to make the cues but to be timely and
very dependab;le

Bob Owen and Jerry Rauenzahn

I will bet you $100 that Jerry is not a week late in an order that might take 1 year to build your cue

If he says you will have the cue on April 1,it will not be April 2

I like that, people should be dependable

Bob is just as dependable and talented but he doesn't set dates,
but you won't be disappointed with either one of these guys

In fact check Bob's web,he has a real beauty for $1000 that
you could buy today

Take a look at your cue, look at other cues. Everything on the cue, & maybe in the cue, should be discussed. When it's glued up & clear coated , changes are hard, if not impossible, to make.

If you want the woods to match in size, color & grain, make that specification. If you want the balance at 18.7, make that specification & on & on & on.

Good Luck...

When the Mighty Lucasi Cocobolo cue was ordered I had a number of difficult conversations with the builder.
The talented head cue maker at Lucasi cues Ling Chou Lucasi is only 14 years old and does not speak English.
But after many weeks of translations he understood what i wanted.
The cue came out as close to perfect as possible.

Most important things which have not been mentioned...Terms and Conditions.

1. How much and payment thresholds:
- Final purchase price
- Down payment
- Outsourced component payment (example client wants specific third party shafts)

2. Estimated start and completion dates

Getting the business pieces tied down will make everyone happier.

I underscore Dean's opinion about Bob & Jerry, both of whom are as reliable as tomorrow's sunrise.
Jerry is likely not as available to you with things winding down towards his long awaited retirement.
Bob happens to be the sole owner of Shurtz Cues and so he's obviously accepting new cue orders.

Both guys are tremendous talents in the cue-making world and are men of integrity and also their word.
I regularly play with all my Owen and Rauenzahn cues so picking a favorite is genuinely a difficult choice.
Here's the last cue Bob made for me in 2016; he truly exceeded my expectations which rarely happens.

For me it's generally been:

Choice of woods
Number of points and veneers if any
Veneer colors if any
Joint type
Butt diameter
Hoppe ring or not
Shaft diameter and requested weight(typically over 4oz)
Butt weight(around 15.75oz)
