I just created a T-Shirt including an illustration of squirt, swerve, and throw, along with the actual math/physics equations describing the effects.

I thought some of the pool physics nerds (and others) on AZB might like it.

For more information, go to the "Got English?" T-Shirt page.

I hope some of you appreciate it and maybe even decide to wear it,
Dave

PS: Here a video demonstrating the concepts on the shirt:

I love it.
Thank you. I was a little nervous about doing this since it took a lot of effort and some expense to get it up and running; but I'm very happy with how the shirts look, so I'm glad I did it.

Regards,
Dave

Very cool, Dave - you'll be hearing from me.

pj <- hope my immigrant neighbors don't take it the wrong way

I love it, And I've enjoyed all of Dr. Dave's videos, BUT. Unless I'm seeing it wrong, doesn't right english transfer left to the object ball?

You should put under "Got English", "(it's actually math)" in small type.

I guess you're thinking right English should throw the OB to the left (not to the right as shown)?

Good eye - but for this thin cut (45 degrees?) it would take almost maximum right spin to do that, and a small-to-moderate amount of right spin can throw more to the right than no spin would.

I know, it's counterintuitive, but I think Dave's drawing has it right for most cases.

Love it, just make sure it's on a comfy quality shirt and I'm in for one!

As a thank you for all of the great illustrations you’ve posted over the years (many of which are quoted in my FAQ resource pages), I’ll send you one for free. Just email me your size and mailing address.

Catch you later,
Dave

It took me two seconds to see this shirt and want to buy it instantly (and did).

But where is the obligatory picture of a girl straddling a stick with some sexual innuendo about “just the tip”, “it takes balls to play pool”, “just stroke it”, “tits and pockets”, “butts and shafts”, or some other similar phrase that helps warn women that you’ll probably spike their drink while they’re shooting if they play with you?

For a nearly straight shot, right sidespin throws the OB to the left and transfers left spin to the OB. With a cut angle, things depend on the amount of sidespin. With gearing outside english, there is absolutely no throw or spin transfer, and the OB heads exactly in the line-of-centers direction. With less sidespin than the gearing amount, the OB will actually throw to the right (due to cut-induced throw); and with more sidespin than the gearing amount, the OB will throw to the left (due to spin-induced throw), as shown in the T-Shirt diagram.

FYI, good illustrations and videos dealing with this stuff can be found on the throw tutorial resource page.

Dave

I went through a bunch of edits before settling on the simplest design now on the shirts. I like your idea, but I think the less text on the shirt, the better.

Wow - thanks, Dave!

I’ll probably spend it on more of your stuff anyway. :)

Thank you! I’m glad to hear people like the design.

Funny. Actually, with the equations on the shirt, the ladies might actually think you are smart and have a good job, so maybe the ruffies won’t be necessary after all.

Good luck with the shirt,
Dave

My family will get a kick out of it. They’re all strong HAMB players. The last time I played my dad he joked that I was going to pull out a protractor to figure out my next shot given that I take a fairly scientific approach to my practice. They’ll get a kick out of seeing me in this shirt.

AZB is back!

How did we survive the downtime? :grin-square:
