Moving to Silver Spring, Maryland

In D.C. Proper, not happening. Not even within a 45 min commute.

Best bet would be to get home in sterling or ashburn and work in Reston.

Plenty of uncle sugar's money out there and they might just need to buy you for your clearance...I hear it happens.

It'd be cool to have you around, but I never get out, really.

.

Or rent Roy's garage.... with basement priveledges of course

There's nothing in Silver Spring or Wheaton, Maryland, except a couple yup spots. If you like bar pool, however, a lot of locals join the American Legion because they have a league there and the beer is cheap.

If you want league pool, you may have to drive to Virginia or Frederick, Maryland. Balitmore is about 45 minutes away, but the traffic to and from is brutal sometimes. I would not suggest doing that on weekdays. Weekends, though, are fine.

If you enjoy one-pocket, you must travel the Beltway to Quball 1 LLC. It is 1 mile off the Beltway. Really great pool room with excellent and well-maintained equipment. He usually has a monthly one-pocket event, but go there just to experience the ambiance. This is a player's pool room. No liquor, no loud music, no dancing. Just pool and hanging out with other like-minded pool peeps. This is the last of a dying breed of pool rooms.

Dynamite Kid is an excellent sparring partner. He's picked up my other half many times and battled with him on a field of tournament blue and green. Plus, he's a nice guy, been playing pool since he was a kid. Man, I'm old. I remember those days when he was a junior pool champion. Now he's all grown up with a family and a job. Responsibilities sometimes have a way of getting in the way of pool, and that's a good thing. Pool is cool, but family is the best gift anyone can have in life.

Virginia has some great regional tournaments on weekends, which might be attractive to you. Also, don't rule out the Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour. Mike Zuglan has weekend events, and they're usually a half-day's drive from Silver Spring/Wheaton area. Well worth it, though, to experience pool in the Northeast. They still have real pool rooms up there, unlike our area.

So there you have it. I gave you a snippet of the pool scene. You can make it work if you're a strong pool enthusiast.

I worked there, day and graveyard shift. Loved that job. Not for the money, but for the action. Man, do I have some pool tales!

Richard Allen owned it. His son, Gary, now owns Champion's in Frederick, Maryland. The Frederick pool room does have a separate room for pool only, but it is a bar. They have music on weekends, dancing, liquor, good food, et cetera. But I think they also have leagues, which is fun.

When I used to shoot pool, playing socially was the most fun I ever had in the pool world. As soon as I met my other half and traveled the professional tournament trail, reality smacked me hard in the face, and I realized even when you win, you're so stuck from the other events because of expenses that you will never, ever get ahead. You must come in first, second, and third almost each and every time to break even. Only a few can make a living at it, and they must be doing it full-time, on the road, traveling the world. Forget about having a family, children, and a spouse if you want to play professionally, unless you pay for them to come with you. Then you'll really be broke.

But I digress. I'm so digusted with professional pool. I pray Barry Hearn can make something happen with the U.S. Open as he's done with snooker and the Mosconi Cup. Professional pool is circling the drain and has been for about 5 years. Social shooters, leagues, and regional tournaments, they are thriving in USA. That's where one can get their pool high today.

A home table is likely out of the question. I'll be stuck in an apartment for a while.

If at all possible, choose a complex that has pool tables. There are several in the DC and surrounding areas. Especially the newer complexes being built in DC.

They have one at my GF's complex that I was using pretty regularly, until some acrobat ripped the cloth and then a second acrobat (probably on the same team) damaged the slate. Still waiting for the management to bring the table back up to spec.

I'd only add that Triple Nines (on U.S. 1 in Elkridge) is in the process of upgrading their tables, and now has a first rate Diamond plus a very good small pockets Brunswick in the back, and a not-so-bad Brunswick table where they hold the Big Rack during their Saturday night tournaments. The pool tables are in the back of the room, and you can practice for a $6 flat rate from noon to 6 every afternoon. Not much action, but at least all their tables are regulation size. Great atmosphere, too.

I've heard lots of good things about Brews 'n' Cues, but all they have are toy tables, AKA Bar Boxes. Another sign of America's decline----bring back the 5 x 10's and a few snooker tables.

Thank you for this well written article. I will forward it to the guy that presented us with One Pocket A Game of Controlled Aggression. Tom Wirth... aka Tom Tom

I would be surprised if Tom had not seen that long ago.

I would also not be surprised if he didn't tell you so.

I’m fortunate to chat often with Tom. Aside from being nice nice person he’s quite interesting. Like to hear why he got dubbed TomTom. I heard one story so far.

Hey Taxi,

Good to hear that Triple 9s is upgrading the tables there. Part of the reason that I haven't been there for the Saturday tournament in a while. Those Brunswick Century tables are definitely not the best, and the mix matched ball sets and different cueballs on each table really make for a frustrating tournament on top of the already odd format. (8ball on winners, 9ball on losers, loser breaks, races to 3 both sides).

These are my excuses for playing poorly and I'm sticking to it.

Count on it. Likely staying at Fort Meade the first month or two, but the job is at the National Museum of Health and Medicine in SS.
You may want to look into the forest glen barracks or base versus Fort Meade it is much closer and would cut your commute in half or more...

At least for the first few months until you get settled. I just assumed you would be on base until you work everything out..

9100 Brookville Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20910

They have a commissary and I assume some barracks as well? But, not sure???

Worth looking into versus traveling all the way to fort Meade...

Hey Heath, been missing you out there, even though I understand the reasons you've been staying away. If it were up to me, they'd make it a race to 5 / race to 4 nine ball only tournament, but a lot of players get intimidated by the better nine ball players and so they want to have a game where shot making isn't emphasized as much. At least that's the excuse I've been told.

One other thing I should have mentioned, although it's something my wife noticed before I did: They installed a new ventilation system, and so now your clothes don't smell like hamburger grease when you get home. I think this is what's known as one of life's little victories, at least for the wives and non-pool playing GFs.

Oh, and there's a new room with 10 regulation Diamond tables opening up soon on Shady Grove Rd. in Gaithersburg, between 270 and 355. It's called Seven Billiards, and here's their Facebook page. Hopefully they'll start having a nine ball tournament, because driving to Virginia in rush hour is a pain in the butt.

If one was to move to the Washington, D.C. area to work as a military/government contractor, what area would be best to be able to buy a house affordably (with room for a full 9 foot table), but still have a workable commute to D.C.? Given the pay rates in the area, I would say "affordable" is up to $350,000.00, depending on tax rates..

This is going to be a difficult task.

I live in Arlington (my wife works in DOD IT as a contractor) and in my humble opinion, you are not going to find anything $350K and under that will accommodate a 9 foot table (unless you dedicate the dining room) and have a "workable" commute into DC proper.

Not uncommon for people I work with to have $500K and up houses and a 1 to 1.5 hour commute into DC each way.

Honestly, for that price range you would be either south of Fredricksburg or almost into West Virginia.

I think an abandoned home in DC might fit the budget. Gonna need renovation, obviously.

It is kill or be killed in there though!

Thanks for the info. Who owns it?

Pool Rooms in DC

What should I know about rooms/leagues/tournaments in the area?

Hope you find a room you are looking for.
We have all the establishments mentioned above on the directory of pool rooms on The GoPlayPool App. Desktop/mobile or app. The app is free.

It lists all the info for the establishment including: amenities, table count, sizes and brands, food, bar menu and entertainment as well.

You get filter options for: leagues, tournaments and/or age limits
And you get sort options for table sizes and count and more...

Check it out. The listings are not perfect, since we are always gathering new information and editing as we go.

Hope you enjoy your new home and be safe
