Buddy Hall's Grip

Ran across this video and it reminded me of some of the threads on here where someone is always asking "how tight to grip the cue", or something of the sort.

Look at Buddy's grip. He isn't holding it between two fingers and babying it, like the Queen of England sipping her tea. He is using his WHOLE big hand to grip the cue. That is sort of the way I do it, too. I can control the cue ball a lot better when I have a firm grip on the cue.

Not to say that is the "best" method for everyone, but it is the "best" method for ME.

The guy has a hamhock for a hand. If I grip tight I start wanting to put some
sort of flourish on the shot and start missing. I lightened up my grip a while back and my accuracy improved.

not sure I would model my playing grip by someone's breaking grip

Agree

The same has worked for me also.

Not just his breaking grip. Buddy lived here in Tulsa a while and i watched him play almost everyday. He holds the cue fairly lightly but he grips it sorta like the way you'd hold a hammer. More palm-to-cue contact than most players. It may look like it but Buddy's not gripping it tightly. His ginormous mitts just make it look that way.

He also ate like 10 eggs and a fist full of ups for breakfast, when he was at his best.

Like most things, it ain't for everyone.

Funny, I've done a lot of work on my grip lately. And I have found a full hand grip improves my probability of keeping the cue on line and delivering a perfectly straight stroke. Like garczar points out, Buddy's grip has more palm contact, a more hammer-like hand/wrist position which also helps keep the cue level through the delivery motion. Notice Buddy more or less pushes the cue through without much added wrist action. This method allows me to hit the ball firmer (when needed) and still maintain accuracy. Work will continue but so far results are promising....

Exactly. Buddy was/is never "wristy" looking in his delivery. He doesn't lock it but its very quiet. His elbow is his main delivery source. And believe me, its LASER straight. To call his strike pure is a gross understatement.

Quiet wrist is a good way to describe it. An over-active wrist certainly detracts from my accuracy. "Pushing the cue smoothly" is my new practice mantra and still produces all the spin ever necessary.

Yeah, it is kinda 70's x-rated background music. Not that i ever saw a '70's x-rated movie. ;)

Calling BS on you, Gar. I saw "Debbie Does Tulsa". You were IN it! I saw you. In the pool room scene where Debbie gets done on the 9' GC. So you saw one from the inside out.

This is what happens these days when you LIE. BUSTED. The days of tossing curveballs unimpeded are long over, my friend.

You got me. Problem is now the "money shot" is more like a "handful of change" shot. ;)

I wouldn't know... I've never seen any of "those kind" of movies.

Except Debbie Does Tulsa. And that was at a wedding shower ( ex-wife's cousin ) so I couldn't leave.
