What color felt is best?

Shreveport Louisiana area. Ark-La-Tex region... Northwest Louisiana, Southwest Arkansas, Northeast Texas.

The man who referred me has owned a pool hall for many years and also builds cues and he highly recommended this fellow, who does it as a sideline business.
 
Simonis Green and Simonis Tournement Blue. Both are fine and it comes down to the look you want really. If it doesn't clash with your room, I'd give an edge to the blue.

Good choice to spend the extra $$ and go with Simonis 860, you won't regret it. Tournament blue or Simonis green are the two best colors. You are not likely to do better than $275 for 8-foot bed and rails, once you add shipping and tax, so the $300 you were quoted by your mechanic was certainly a very fair price. As for as knowing it is Simonis, it is stamped in to the cloth on the edge of the roll, so you should see it somewhere.

genuine simonis cloth is also marked with id numbers that can be seen with a blacklight. If you don't have one the handheld ones can be had for just a few bucks on ebay and many other places. This has been done by Simonis for anti-counterfeiting purposes.

There's a reason why counterfeiters try to fake Simonis. Just like counterfeiters try to produce fake Rolex watches and not Timex. ;)
 
Yeah, that's what I was thinking... that just because I buy something that says Simonis doesn't mean it is. Do you know where numbers are that can be seen under black light? Maybe I could find an old fart like me around here who has a black light.

Rats, I looked at the room and I'm not sure about Tournament Blue color due to clash. The walks are painted kind of a pastel lime green and the tight weave carpet has greens, browns and ivory specks. I wish I could find a cloth or something I could lay on the table to visualize it!

The color that is on there is the 'standard' blue-green color you saw on just about all pool tables 50 years ago. To me, it looks like the color of Simonis green, including the photo directly above somebody posted. And it seems more blue-green to me than green. So, hmmm.... makes discerning a clash even harder.

I wonder if this guy would have enough call for both colors so that we could order both and use whatever does not clash? I'd even be willing to front the bill until he moved the other cloth if there is a decent demand for Simonis around here.

Championship Mercury Ultra is good fast cloth. I’ve seen it used in regional tournaments and at home. I love it. I wouldn’t say it’s as good as Simonis but it’s miles better than the shag carpet most bars install.

That may be why my choice is green, plus it is also traditional. That being said the few times I have played on Beige cloth all the balls were super easy to see.
 
Take 860HR. Simply the best. Normal 860 is slower. Especially on damp weather/places. If you have nice really dry conditions, then you are okay with normal 860.
Also when thinking price I suggest to consider this:
425 vs 600 is 175 difference. Good cloth with care(and quality balls) will last home at least 2 years if not playing 8 hours per day.
So 365x2 is 730. Divide that 175 cost to 730 and you will get 24 cents per day price for more expensive felt. So I feel it is really stupid to save from cloth. It affects game so much...
Not to mention at all that bad cloth ruins your game and enjoyment. Just 2 cents from table mechanic from Finland.

Does not mean he is good. I’ve had referrals from pool rooms and homeowners that I regretted. And they were highly recommended. Consider referral from AZB after doing some research. Good luck with everything.

Table cloth is cloth.
It is spun and woven.
Felt is generally made from rabbit fur.
Sorry to nitpick, but when I see Freddie lose his mind, I thought it okay to clarify why.

Possibly there are lots of people who match the description of "has owned a pool hall for many years and also builds cues" in Shreveport, LA. If it was Bill Schick, I would go with his recommendation. But what do I know?

1. What is the best flavor of ice cream.
2. What's better, Ford or Chevy.
3. Once we have determined the best color of cloth, which chalk works best with that color?


I guess it comes down to personal preference.

to a degree this is very true.

but in the context of the question in this thread, if you put black cloth on your table, for instance, good luck shooting those 8 balls for the cash. :) :p :D

Lewie, lights and photos do funny things. Both photos of your GCI with Simonis green sure look like blue/green to me in your photos, including the inner sides of your light shades. To me, Simonis green looks much greener. Maybe I'm going color blind!

That really does not look like Simonis green to the far left or english/snooker green on the table itself. Lights and photos do funny things unless I'm going color blind? Can anyone second my opinion?

They would have an easier time faking a Rolex.....that is the truth. Lesser metals can be made to look real, movements can be faked.....if they made a fake dominos that was good enough to pass it more than likely would have ended up making it right. Fwiw.

Sorta how money feels if you got an intaglio press denim and cotton your on the right track hahahahaha
