today by a player I had previously beat

I just seemed to be afraid to play or impatient

I fell dead from the get go and never recovered
from a bad start

The money was minimum, but i felt like a dog

Pool is a very tough game isn't it?

When things are going well, pool can feel effortless. But sometimes things go haywire. Selling out or not selling out in one pocket can be a matter of inches. Sometimes the inches work in your favor, and sometimes they don't.

Amen and amen ( about 50 times ).

( and, you don't even get points for who you are. The Pool Gods couldn't care less )

I know the feeling. Moreso lately than ever.

I go through spurts where I will beat players with 750ish to 780ish Fargo ratings in 10 ball playing even for a few hundred a set. Lol, then turn around lose badly to players that have Fargo ratings in 650 range and lower.

We all (us mortals) have bad moments, days, hell, in my case weeks where I play way below my actual skill level for no apparent reason to me.

It's still fun though.....of course, until a certain point. Lol, that's when some like myself have to either take a break or grin and bare it.

Some days are just not pool days, for whatever reason.

I know when I play the first rack of balls in practice if I'm going to have a good or bad day.

Pool is 90% mental and if your mind isn't into it your game will struggle.

You know what, I don’t know where you live but I believe that we all play like shit in winter weather. I have a personal beliefs that if Mosconi was played in June or July the Americans would stomp some serious European ass, I mean it wouldn’t even be close.
During the summer it wouldn’t even be close, by day two the Americans would have to be taken from the round bar at the hotel and be forced to play because it would be over and the Euro trash would be hiding in their rooms wishing for a ride back to Heathrow.
But that’s just what I think, guess we’ll never know.
Winter play takes a certain player, the Americans aint it, if it was summer time the Euros
would be toast. Make fun, contradict, disagree, or whatever, it’s what I think,
The rest of you, SUCK IT. X

I get dehydrated in the cold, dry months. When dehydrated, vision can suffer.

My depth perception and focus goes south from dry eye.

The change of seasons takes a toll, especially from warm to cold. No one likes to think so
but it is, and no one thinks it is, but it is. Everyone loves the warm weather, the cold
weather is a hard thing, if you’re older than 30 or 35, the cold makes your knees hurt,
your shoulders hurt, your ankles hurt, dude, it just happens when you get older, and no
one wants to admit it or wants to feel it, but it happens. It’s different than when we were
younger. If I was still 25 or 26 I’d be kickin’ all your asses and laying more pipe than you
could count, Las Vegas would be my office, but now you need to know that Heet, and
Tiger Balm is a good friend. Embrace it, work with it, and in the spring beat the snot out
of those Millennial punks. They don’t know nuthin’ until they’ve been walked on by
Donna Summer, Earth Wind and Fire, and KC and The SunShine Band.
The 80’s were awesome and they don’t know about it until you show ‘em

Jimmy, Deanoc, stay with me baby’s,
you guys are the man, don’t take any shit, we’re counting on you. Just keep it together, honorable
until April, Then we let ‘em have it like they don’t know

Nice post Deanoc. I had the same day yesterday. It was very painful. The symptoms were just like you described. Too tight, trouble keeping focused on the table, and irritated by how difficult the game was. When you're playing well it's the opposite. You're tight enough to be focused and engaged by the challenges in front of you.

If only it were as easy as saying "That's the attitude I want to have" and then you could always keep it. Sometimes that happens, but sometimes it doesn't, so there is more to it than deciding that you want to have a good attitude. That's like trying to decide to play great pool.

For me it's been a funny journey. There's a right balance of confidence and humility that leads to great play. Then it's easy to become too confident and you can go down in flames.

Motivation is also a huge factor. You have to have fuel for the tank. When I was young I was big on dreams of greatness and wanting to beat the other player. Today I have none of those dreams and really don't care at all about my opponent or whether my opponent beats me.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? Well, I'm not so sure. My motivation has shifted. While some of those desires have waned, I love pool more than I ever have, and I still love competition. It is simply important to me to do my best, and I'm not satisfied with less. And when I am doing well, suddenly I do care if I win or lose, and I fight like a lion. It's like when I'm in the right state of mind I can recapture my competitive spirit. Maybe letting go of my competitive spirit is something I do out of self defense when I'm dogging it so it doesn't hurt so much when I lose, but I'm not sure because it still hurts a lot to play poorly and come up short. But when I'm dialed in the adversity in front of me looks exciting, like "let's see if I can handle this!".

In preparing for play today I can only come back to the fact that ultimately I love games, I love pool, and I love the challenge. And what makes that challenge so meaningful is that it's difficult enough that we don't always succeed. I don't know how I will play today but I will definitely be approaching the game with a renewed respect for how tough it is, physically and mentally. I don't think I will take anything for granted. I will be prepared for whatever adversity I face and look forward to it. And I am going to have fun trying.

Victory and loss come in pairs, you can't obtain meaningful victory without devastating defeats. Victory is waiting for the players that want it enough to accept that and sign up for both.

When I played a lot....you get to know yourself better.
My first look at a table would determine how I made a game.
....if the balls looked big, they were in trouble...I’d give them what they wanted.
...if the balls looked small, I was going to be playing safe a lot more.

Fellas ,it was short pants day in Dallas in the afternoon

I take no solace from the winter Excuse
I had bee playing good all week(relatively speaking)

Up till the time I played no good,I missed straight in shots

At any rate I have a Gold Crown 5 in the garage,

can practice at home

Thanks for all the comfort, maybe I will post
pictures of me playing good next week

It's that carbon fiber shaft that you played with the day before. It threw off your
aiming, timing, thinking made you irregular and who knows what else. Get that
and everything pool related that you have in the mail to me today, I've warned
you about this before. Oak Cliff guys can't play a lick if there are too many things
to think about As you are well aware I have mastered the art of not thinking.
jack

Almost like golf, some days the ball goes in the hole ,some days it won't.No great
theory about it,But like missing ball in hand.It won't be the last time.haha

Pay attention, Dean. This guy knows your weaknesses and strengths. Too many gadgets are confusing your ol' time style. Get back to basic equipment. If God wanted you to play with a carbon fibre shaft, there would be one located below your belt! LOL

i am so lucky to have a friend like jack
included in hisjibe is rare wisdom

i had ordered over a dozen shafts for my schon with the ivory joint
i am playing my best with it so i decided to buy a bunch of shafts

jack put his finger on the problem with one question
"why do you want to fiddle around if you like it"

i will be sending all this stuff that is confusing me directly to Jack this week

By the way how did he ever master the ability to not think
Whatever,it works for him pretty good

Wait, I have too many shafts to mail, and a couple of merry widow Schons for Jack to test
I have carbon fiber ,a Tascarella and Searing shaft on the way

it would be better for Jack to bring my horse to Dallas
and pick up this cue stuff

i wish Jack would post pics of the cue is is using and the case

I would bet
$100 that at least one Az player will agree that it is the perfect pair
cue and case dream package

I am afraid Jack thinks I would sell it out from under him again

what he doesn't realize is that it is almost impossible to sell a cue with pictures

It takes away the intrigue, adventure, and romance

you guys know that.

Try playing with a safety net so it won't hurt as much or better yet switch to cards as there is less physical effort and hand eye coordination. 👍🏻
