All Japan Championship Starts Today!

Chua was down 8-3 when he took over. From there the only game where Ko got back to the table was at 5-8 and he had a few chances to win that game, but couldn't make a good shot when he had the chance. After Chua won that game to make it 6-8, he ran out the match, five of the most beautiful Ten Ball racks you'll ever see. He made some very tricky run outs along the way. In the final game at 10-8, Chua finally got out of line on the eight ball and had a bad angle to get shape on the nine. He made the eight and bumped the nine, leaving a difficult tight angle for his next shot. He opted to shoot a severe cut on the nine into the side and go up and down the table for the ten. He made the nine but over ran position for the ten. He left the cue ball in the jaws of the corner pocket and the ten near the spot, a very testy little shot into the side pocket to win the match. If Chua was every going to fold under pressure, this would be the moment. Chua calmly stepped up there and rolled that ten ball dead in the side. The man is one great pool player. He just made Ko look like the weaker player.

One other thing to note. Late in the match, Chua was hooked on the three ball by the ten, which was only a couple of inches away from the three. The cue ball was about a diamond behind them. Chua pulled out his jump cue and made the most unbelievable jump shot I think I've ever seen during a match. He jumped the full ten and landed on the three, forcing it forward into the pocket. The cue ball then backed up for perfect position on the four. Holy Moley! And the best part is you can see this match on Youtube now.
The shot on the ten ball was insane....:bow-down:

Wow, so many top guns KOed in last 16
Oi, Chang Jung Lin, Hijikata, Thorsten, Johann Chua, Aloysius Yapp all out.
For sure this year will crown a first time winner and not a multiple winner like previous years.
IMHO, either Ko Ping Chung or Biado will win it this year but I will not be surprised if one of other lesser knowns win it

Little Ko is in good form. Wouldn't be surprised if Tomoya won it. Has played great in some of the Grand Prix events in Japan.

Maybe it's because I'm a traditionalist, but man I think the bright green cloth looks great on camera. The tournament blue might be easier on your eyes to play (allegedly), but man the green just pops on camera and it makes it easier to see the balls too. I've often thought the bright green baize and contrasting colorful balls was part of snooker's visual appeal as well.

I prefer the green, too.

I think it is easier to see the balls on green cloth.

I've never watched this Japanese guy play before, but he plays a very "polished" game.

Cheng has won plenty of stuff, but he always looks "choppy" to me...up, down, up, down, start, pause, up, down, etc., etc., etc.".

Toru has been Naoyuki Oi's teammate in the World Cup of Pool many times.

;)

I just noticed that Cheng's win over Chang Jun-Lin in the previous round was 11-3. I wonder how that lopsided score came about.

And Kuribayashi breaks and runs out at hill/hill (after a couple blunders by Cheng in the prior game).

So the Semifinals: Biado vs. Kuribayashi and Ko vs. Takano.

Kuribayashi and Takano are in the Finals. When was the last time two players from Japan did that?

The last time a Japanese player won was Takeshi Okumura in 2005. I don’t know if there has ever been 2 Japanese players in the finals before.

Maybe an historical day, eh?

But this is the 51st event, right? Surely two Japanese were in the Finals some time.

I’m sure there has been, but it was likely when the tournament was still Japanese rotation instead of 9 or 10 ball.

Oh, I didn't know about the Japanese rotation.

I just looked up Okumura. Wiki says he won 7 times -- 1979-1982, 1993, 1995, and 2005.
