Are there any pool players who still want to win a big score

Anytime discussing opinions, there is always an assessment of those opinions. Whether it is vocalized or brought up is another thing.

My opinion is your opinion is wrong and I demonstrated why it is flawed. See, we're sharing our opinions

If I subject my opinion and I don't want to hear if it's right or wrong, I'm really not interested in the truth.

If my opinion is that players should stand up at the end of the stroke everytime, I expect someone will give me their opinion that I'm wrong. For the most part I am wrong w that opinion. Knowing I'm wrong and why in this case will make me a better player. That's part of why I come here, for people to confirm or criticize my theories and practices.

Edit: Btw, for a fact it is not wrong because it's your opinion? Wtf is that?

I already "demonstrated" my experience and you sound like a totally unreasonable person. Other words come to mind when I see this type of "logic" or lack there of,but, I am not going there. Instead of agreeing to disagree about something that cannot be proven as TRUTH, you would rather use that argument??? HAHAHAHAHA. Have a nice day!

I tried to give you rep for this post but I couldn't. I've gambled all my life and still do. I've managed to keep my integrity and reputation intact by being an honorable gambler. I pay off when I lose and expect the same in return.

When you get right down to it everything in life is a gamble. Buying property, stocks, gold or whatever all has inherent risk to it. Opening a business is even more risky.

I've been fortunate in business and other investments that make up for some bad habits I acquired along the way. I've made ten times as much money playing poker as pool, but I enjoyed my years in pool far more. In poker you sit on your ass all day, keep your mouth shut and study your opponents carefully. There is zero physical activity involved. Pool has a Zen to it unlike any other game I've played.

Jay, I know a bit about you from seeing you post on here for the 6 years I been a member and I know you are a straight up guy. There are not many out there that share your story! Dean C as well. You guys had fun and took care of business. Not many people who gamble can do that successfully. I feel it is very safe to say most people cannot do the things you guys managed to pull off. Hat's off to you guys, but, the world is a much different place than the one you guys came up in!! Have a great night Jay!

Hey, I'm from Dayton! We're hard as nails Buckeyes! We learned how to behave and how to take care of ourselves. Thanks Trent.

P.S. I knew Ted Elias. He was Toledo's best player ever and would gamble high with anyone. Terrific guy too!

We all have our opinions. Like I said I have mine and I am sticking to it.

Gambling most likely hurts more people than it helps. I know a few people that are addicted to it and it is terrible.

Just because something is "successful" does not mean it is good for everyone, I am sure there are plenty of people who lose money that they never should have been betting in any fashion.

Another example: a local pro(I will not say his name) from my town is not even allowed in one of the pool rooms I service because people he had hustled came in there looking for him.
I also know a guy who has won over $70k in lottery over the last 5 years, he is the only person I know or ever met who it has benefitted.

I am not going to even address your comment about the last topic because it has nothing to do with the conversation at hand. Good day to you :)

You're the one that called them "bums with no morals". Just pointing out the total lunacy of your statement.

HUH?? I was defending gambling/gamblers. I find nothing wrong with it. It kills me when the topic of "why isn't pool bigger" comes up and gambling gets blamed way too often. Gambling is the least of pool's problems imo.

If gambling is a problem please explain this: the most successful/lucrative cue sport is snooker. You can bet on these matches anywhere right up to the last ball. The reasons that pool is not more mainstream are many no doubt. Gambling is way down on that list. BTW, i've been around gamblers for about 40yrs. There have been some dead-beats but to paint them all with the " bums with no morals" brush is idiotic. The majority that i've know have been pretty square-up guys just tryin' to make a living. Wish i could say the same for all the freak-show preachers/priests in the news over the same 40yrs.

Brit and Euro cueman are on the whole far more classy, this will never change.

I'm just gonna say you are wrong and move on.

Well Deanoc, you have a talent for starting threads that get responses, yes you do!

No, I never said that and that is a fact. You edited it to make it sound how you wanted it to. Please do not quote me unless you are going to do it properly. Doing it any other way is what is called a lie because I did not say that. This is what I said:

"We need real athletes with real discipline and not these bums who don't work and have ZERO ethics/ morals." Obviously Jay and Dean do not fit that description....

Thanks and have a nice day!

I agree with most of it.

But, I really don't care if my opponent has a job. All i care about is: does he have the cheese to pay off if he loses?

Trent, most pros and amateurs alike that are strong players don't have a job per say. Pool is their job.

It's really, really tough, almost impossible to be a really strong player, stay in action while holding a 9 to 5 down....not to mention, taking care of a family.

Sure, I know what you mean though. I too HATE all the MANY MANY a55hats that step into the box with air barrels.

Pool, just like people are not the same as before. Sure, in early days people were more ethical and men in general had more character, not to mention more pride.

All good things come to an end.

I think you may be romanticizing the past.

Plenty of stories on scammers, scumbags, etc. from the past.

If anything it's gotten better over the years. Plus now gambling is getting rarer, and rarer every year.

I agree with you. Read the first sentence of my post #18 again.

Same shit, different day.

First time in a pool hall when I was 17....my first shot, I scooped whitey off the table.
...lost over a week’s pay playing poker pool on a 6x12.

Been trying to get even ever since....:banghead:

hey, I scooped whitey off two days ago
in my defense, I was...ah, nevermind:p

but a player, my dad, used to say
I just want to break even
I'm pretty sure he did better than that
but fair comment, I think

If you can play like Robocop all you have to do to make a big score is enter the biggest tournament you can find.

So Jay and Dean are the only exceptions to your sweeping generalization that the people who gamble are the downfall of this game and people who gamble are not athletes, but unemployed bums w no ethics or morals.

Got it. Thank you for clearing that up. It's opinions like these that give me such a solid understanding of the sport.

Jeff,

Thanks for understanding where I am coming from on this topic. I would say trying to be Pro or a Progressing Am at any sport requires more time than I can imagine. Juggling a job, family and hobbies is hard enough for sure. Kind of my point here though and I am just into my second year raising a family myself.

To be clear: I am not saying Pool is broken, but, it definitely needs a "facelift"...

IMO There are 16 hours a day to do stuff and some days I use up more time than that. The sport needs young people that are athletes and have discipline to set a standard for future generations of pool players to have the opportunities for career's in Cue Sports. Hopefully the Olympic bid for France in 2024 makes it! This would be the push Cue Sports need IMO. I think sponsors are going to be looking for young people like Tyler Styer and they will have the chance to train like real athletes.

Olympic Skateboarding is a fine example of what I am speaking of and I have been skateboarding since 1985. DC, Vans,<<-- (Originals still around) Nike, Addidas, New Balance and other shoe companies have been slowly entering the market that was once only dominated by small skateboard based companies only. Most Pros could not make a living at all. Now, shoe sponsors, energy drinks & contest money are pretty much at the core of how Pro's make a living. Some Pros don't even have a board sponsor anymore. All of this progression is leading to younger people able to achieve their dream: they can have a healthy career doing something they love.

So if I sounded "negative" about pool, I am not. I love pool and want to see it become something a young person can believe in and that our country supports & respect's as a professional sport. That is all.
