That match was 1996. I was there. Efren was still smoking during this time.
1997 Legends of 9-Ball, Parica beat Efren.
The cloth was camel colored.

Not the 96 legends of 9 ball, unless you meant you first saw it at the 97 event. I took your reply to mean that is was in 96 at the legends of 9 ball.
I can't actually name the first event but I think I got the city it was in and what event it was after.

I remember hearing Efren and a common friend.
Efren was telling a friend he could not perfect his cue ball control.
I knew the cloth was camel.
He lost to Parica in the finals.
Parica shot a 1.000 to beat Ellin in one match.
1997 was Parica's year. He was the player of the year that year.
Now that I remember it, first time I saw the camel cloth was at that PBT world 8-ball in 1996.
I didn't see events earlier than 1996.
First tournament I saw was in San Diego right after Jay Swanson died in June 1996.
Not all events used the tan cloth. We had 3-4 events in my hometown that used green.
I remember tan cloth from the 60s 70s, not sure if there was a difference, but they used red , blue turquoise ,all kinds of goofy colors. One tournament they used the cloth from the blackjack tables and nobody could draw the cueball more than a couple of inches.
I remember three things in particular at Camel Tour events.
1) the camel colored cloth
2) the ball above each table denoting the table number had a picture of a camel on it
3) the Camel booth offered a 2-1 swap as a promotion. For one pack of your brand, they gave you two packs of Camel cigarettes.
Those were the days.

This was specifically for the Camel tour sponsored events where they switched to the tan Simonis 860 cloth.
That I think is the correct one, San Diego, but I don't know which event was there.
The reason I knew is that in a 1996 Sands Regency video one of the commentators was talking about the cloth being switched to the tan color next event, which he said was San Diego. 96 SRO was in summer, so the swap to tan for Camel pro tour was after that.
I started getting into pool in late 80s but there were not many pro events happening around my area. I think the first one I went to was a Joss event at Country Club USA where Alex Pagulayan was at when he was like 16-18. Met Grady there also, to this day one of the friendliest pool personalities I have met. Only met him that one time but the whole night I ran into him he talked to me like we were friends for 20 years.
