So I picked this Cue up for $80 yesterday. I’m fairly certain it’s a DH3 Meucci. Only a couple of things that are not there that make me wonder a little bit. There is no by Meucci under the David Howard lettering. Also there is a slight difference in the ring work on the shafts. They are two different sizes so I’m inclined to think that this might be to differentiate them when you’re pulling them out of a case so you don’t have to pull them both out to see which one is shorter. I defer to the experts.

I'd think it more likely the shorter shaft was repaired at some point and the ring work recreated.

I cant imagine original cue would have had such shoddy alignment of the rings and maker absolutely wouldnt have let that out with different length shafts.

Differet shafts are easily marked within the joint area. I think your theory on that being the cause for the differences is inaccurate.
 
I think a # of meucci from that era basically fell apart and had to be reglued. Like tinker toys didnt have to go back together the same way either🤪

I owned a few back in the day and never had a "glue" issue with any of them. A friend has a Buddy Hall BH-5 that has a lot of rings and inlay and its still like new. All of mine were made between '79 and probably '85ish and they were all very well made. I never even broke a ferrule although a lot did have ferrule breakage. Late 80's-90's cues did get progressively worse. Seen a couple that were pretty bad.
 
Got a reply from Meucci and talked to somebody over there. They said since the butt Is so short sometimes they miss and part of it can get cut off. As far as the shaft ring work goes he said those things are really hard to get straight and sometimes in production it can offset a little. One of the shafts is 29 inches and the other is 31 inches so somebody ordered a short shaft with it. But they did confirm it is legit. Not bad for 80 bucks!

really not a quality issue , wood shrinks , the plastic or different wood shrinks at a diff rate. hence seperation and things come loose. the window vikings had the same issues.

this is why I dont care for rings of any kind;)
 
Looks like they cracked the butt plate and cut the cracked part off and that is why the butt plate is so short.

Since you say 29 inches is "short" I'm curious how long the butt is.

well, you musta talked to someone who owed 2 on a clue about cues.

They said since the butt Is so short sometimes they miss and part of it can get cut off. what does that even mean? The machinery that makes cues isn't set up to work with cues that are the size of the cues they make? Impossible. Likely: sometimes the cue misses a shot and as a result, the shooter determines it must pay the price for its failure.

As far as the shaft ring work goes he said those things are really hard to get straight. If that cue left the factory like that, it was either in a trash can or supposed to be on the way there. If you know how rings are made and can think of how many a company like that makes...I dont think that off center one slips thru. I also don't thing the person you spoke with knows how rings are made.

The guy at Meuccisaid that the butt ring is short so sometimes when they stamp it it gets cut off. He said it’s not that uncommon.

I've never worked there and I didnt speak to the guy, but i find it hard to believe that such trash is let to pass to the end of the line.

After taking the virtual factory tour, nothing would surprise me.
