Who's your TOP 5?

1. Me - Obvious
2. My buddy Chip - So he could experience it
3. My dad - To have him back for one more game
4. Will Ferrell - because it would just be fun
5. Jasmin Ouschan Because everyone should have a chance to play with Jasmin

If this happens could you make room on the list for Dead Money and his dad too? Much like you I would love to play pool or anything else with my dad.

Tough to argue here with Lassiter, even though he missed my cut in the straight pool discipline, Though less technically elegant than a Crane, Mosconi, or even Caras, Luther Lassiter's game always went up when the stakes were highest, and even some of the most elite were not very inclined to gamble with him at straight pool. I've heard more than a few of the old timers call him pool's straightest ever shooter.
FYI, I was at one of the Johnston City events that Lassiter won and watched every one of his Straight Pool matches. They were 125 point games and in every game Lassiter ran a 90 or better! Of course he won every game. It was like six or seven matches in a row where he played perfect Straight Pool. And these weren't exhibitions either. This fact is in no record book or in any book for that matter, but I wanted it to be in print somewhere.

A well known quote by Lassiter (and he was not one to brag) was, "I'll watch a man play for an hour and if he misses more than one ball I know that I can beat him."

most of those older guys were passed their prime when being filmed.
like when lassiter was younger he just never ever missed a ball he shot at. about the same with mosconi.
same with a more modern era eddie kelly and bill incardona. they never missed a shot all day. and didnt play on perfectly level tables or great cloth .
We used to call that "no miss" pool and when a top player got in stroke (usually in a money game) it was something to see. When you watch a guy run racks and not miss a ball for hours (Buddy, Cardone, Berrnie Schwartz, Jimmy Moore, Greg Stevens, Louie Roberts, Keith, Richie Florence, Jimmy Reid, Ed Kelly, Wade Crane) you are shocked and surprised when they do miss. I've seen all of the above catch that gear.

Good post. I suspect there are only a handful of us who saw Lassiter play in the 1960s. On a few tv specials, and a couple exhibitions, I never saw him lose to anyone. Although he might have been more known for nine ball, from what I saw, that's why I'd put him in the top five for straight pool. Wish I had have been old enough at the time to go to Johnston City.

All the best,
WW

I was looking to see who would post Jimmy Moore. I really love this list, I would want to add Buddy Hall somewhere, but don't know who to bump?
I think Jimmy Moore and Nick Varner are my two all-time favorite players. If I had to bump someone to make room for Buddy it would be either Irving Crane or Mike Sigel, since one all-time great straight pool player from upstate NY is probably enough.

Efren Reyes (The G.O.A.T.)
Shane Van Boening (The winning machine)
Alex Pagulayan (Guaranteed fun)
Willie Mosconi / Minnesota Fats (For the old school trash talk)
Tom Cruise (I just want to play "Vince" to see what he's got!!!!)

You left out Cliff Joyner, who was a truly great player until he hurt his shoulder. Cliff would go looking for strong players to rob, and he did! He just pounded those balls into the pockets from all over the table. He was "Jayson Shaw" and "Josh Filler" before they came along. It was scary to see him at his best. For many years he was the second best One Pocket player in the world to Efren. That's not a bad category to be in.

Wow, great effort here for a new member. Looking forward to more of your posts.

9 ball. I've only added players that I have seen a lot of matches.

All these players at their peak were consistently very hard to beat in finals.

Nick Varner
Earl Strickland
