Fixing the game of 9 ball.

I consider any competition that involves skill ( hand or foot to eye coordination required, at least ) as sport. The participants do not have to be athletes .
Pool is a sport. Snooker is a sport . Corn hole throwing is a sport . Bowling is a sport .
Poker and chess are not . Scrabble is not . Monopoly is not . They are leisure games .
I could agree on all of that, BUT by your definition, video games qualify. It's perfectly fine to have different opinions. I will stand by my belief that pool being a "sport" is very subjective. It's always a fun conversation.

I have no definition! I don't believe pool is any more than a game either, and WON'T ever be considered to be a sport, until the top players get PAID like its a true sport!!

Fishing is a sport and not just an outdoor activity. A sport is something that requires skill, physical exertion, and is competitive. The act of fishing falls under all of these requirements and there are many tournaments and competitions throughout the world. So the main answer is yes
How much physical exertion? Not saying you're wrong, but if pool has enough "physical exertion" to be a sport, then are we also counting hopscotch?

Uh oh, now you're adding money to the list of criteria? I've made my point. I know it's not a popular opinion on a pool forum, but that's ok. It's better than talking about cues all day.

When hopscotch is played in a world level competition, and a world champion is declared the winner, and PAID accordingly....then I'd say yeah, it's a competitive sport!!

Thats an explanation of the game, but not when its turned into a competition sport. According to your explanation, football, basketball m, and baseball...are ALL played as a GAME!!

My explanation of what 'sport' is can be found below and earlier within this thread....
IMHO, a 'sport' is a contest between either individuals or teams. Wherein the real time actions of the opponent can effect the play of the other.

....<sinp> reaction time is a key component in what makes sport, a sport.
Table tennis = sport
Gymnatics = not sport
...etc
My posting of the definition of 'Billiards' was merely a counterpoint to your posting of the definition of game.

I will not claim to have looked at them all, but I'm thinking you're going to struggle to find any reference document of merit that defines billiiards as a sport.

Was your question in requards to a competition fishing derby, or just plain old slip sinker fishing with floating power bait....because there IS a difference, if you're not looking to just argue.

I can happily agree that some forms of fishing are a sport and other forms are not.
Competitive fishing events are definitely a sport !
Certainly deep see fishing for Marlin is a sport !!
Commercial trawling a drag line is not !
nor is most form a fishing for food.

So fishing without a descriptive adverb could be or could not be a sport; you just don't know at that point.

I personally don't consider either golf or pool a sport.

<snip>

Rereading the above, I guess I'm thinking that reaction time is a key component in what makes sport, a sport.
Table tennis = sport
Gymnatics = not sport
...etc

If reaction time determines whether an activity is a sport or not, the pool is not a sport--
UNLESS you count the timing of the snap of the wrist on the delivery of the cue to the CB.

I'd say that a fishing competition between people is not a sport. Once again, I'll draw a line to my example of the opponents not directly effecting the other's performance.

Now, if you'd like to spin it a little, you may be able to argue that it's a sporting competition between the fisherman and the fish...lol

I'd say no, because you don't need to necessarily snap your wrist to deliver the cue ;)

It's not about physical coordination. It's about direct, real time competition, and how the opponents can control the play of the other. Playing a safety may make potting a ball for the opponent difficult, as an example. However that safety does not write in stone the how the other player handles the situation. Time can be spent computing variables and decision/execution can be performed without distraction.

If you just go out to a bar and play pool against anyone who challenges your table, its a came. But the minute you take leisurely playing pool, and place it in the center of a competition, within an organized event, you turn the game of pool into a sporting event. No different than win I go fishing by myself, I'm fishing for something to eat, or my own personal entertainment, such as in catch and release.

But, if I enter into an organized fishing derby, which is held to identify one overall winner, that competition turns fishing into a sporting event pure and simple.

Sport or not a sport, is all in how its defined at the level of involvement at the time.

Flag football on the weekends wouldn't be considered a sporting event, its simply playing a social GAME of football. But, when you put together a team of paid players, to compete against other paid players, its no longer just a game on the weekend, its now a SPORTING event, making the competition a SPORT.

You may as well just replied with "I think it's a sport cause".

We were discussing the validity of labelling pool a sport. Not what constitutes a 'sporting event'.

Just because someone bought a ticket to see the show, doesn't make the spectical a sport.

If you're not partisapating, you'd just be a spectator too!! Function of the activity determines whether or not its a sport, or a game, do you fail to understand the difference between those functions?

My answer!!!!

360 hours live, plus an additional 20 minutes per match, X 120 matches for advertising/break totaling an additional 40 hours. 400 hours in total.
8 simultaneously streamed matches @ 3hrs 20 minutes per match
So you say that pool is broken and you’re fixing it by giving us more hours of pool?
Sorry dude, you’re just not making any sense here to me. I admire your passion but this is the second go around of this bullshit. Maybe you should start small and just have a well run tournament with a great stream and some world beaters and then work up from there? What’s wrong with that? Quit talking about it and do it already.

Oh Lord I wish you were right here!!! I could tell my wife I need to work out more, at least three to four days a week. And I need a bigger boat!
But, unfortunately, you’re completely wrong. Fishing is just a hobby. A freaking awesome hobby. But just a hobby. As they say, it’s a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like an idiot.

Wow, again you have NO idea what your talking about, but you're very entertaining I'll say that!

Since you think you know EVERYTHING, how's this for a 16 player round robin....they're playing for $600k in prize money, $5k a match to the winners!!! Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!!!!
