If you just go out to a bar and play pool against anyone who challenges your table, its a came. But the minute you take leisurely playing pool, and place it in the center of a competition, within an organized event, you turn the game of pool into a sporting event. No different than win I go fishing by myself, I'm fishing for something to eat, or my own personal entertainment, such as in catch and release.
But, if I enter into an organized fishing derby, which is held to identify one overall winner, that competition turns fishing into a sporting event pure and simple.
Sport or not a sport, is all in how its defined at the level of involvement at the time.
Flag football on the weekends wouldn't be considered a sporting event, its simply playing a social GAME of football. But, when you put together a team of paid players, to compete against other paid players, its no longer just a game on the weekend, its now a SPORTING event, making the competition a SPORT.
