Went to a remodeled pool hall today, 13.50 per hour?

So I found out that a pool hall near me, that I went to visit 1 year ago, was reopened with a new owner. The one and only time I was there a year ago, the tables were so dirty and nasty, that I only lasted 30 minutes, before I left in disgust.

so I was pretty happy to learn that a new owner had taken over, and had cleaned the place up, and had recovered the 9 diamond 7 foot tables. I thought wow, this could be my new home. The web page said 6.50 for a solo player per hour. Wow, perfect.

so I walked in today, ready to practice for a hour or two, and the nice girl at the front desk it’s 13.50 a hour to use a diamond table???

I said sweetie, your web page says 6.50 for a solo player? She said not anymore, as the diamonds have been recovered. I said I have two places that only charge 8 dollars per hour for diamonds?

I really wanted to give them my hard earned money and to help them on there journey, become a regular maybe.

but no way am I paying that price. Then I called there house pro for lesson prices, (not saying his name)and he says 100 a hour?

felt like saying dude, your not mark wilson or a famous pro, 100 a hour? So I struck out twice. 😩😩😩😩😩

Not a reflection of OPs opinion on his specific experience but just some thoughts.

We all see how expensive things are these days. I know basic things like regular grocery items have shot up significantly in price in the last year.

It’s crazy expensive to run and maintain a business. Let alone a business that serves the general public.

I don’t mind overpaying to support a quality establishment if they’re backing up their business by investing in providing a clean and comfortable hall.

Too many places these days have pandemic fatigue and have given up on a lot of the regular maintenance to keep a place nice.

Get used to those prices.

In 1970 the cost of a loaf of bread was $0.25 and today it is $2.50

A couple of years ago minimum wage was $7.50 and it is now $15 in many places.

In 1970 the cost to play a rack was $0.10, and should be around $1.00 today (based on the above ratio).

This is what happens when you spend umpteen trillions of dollars to stimulate an economy* in the midst of a pandemic without raising taxes to cover the debt. Debt turns into inflation, and we all suffer the consequences. (*) and don't get me stared on the umpteen trillions we have spend in wars over the last 2 decades, not the umpteen trillions of the lowered tax rates since 1981. Now, where is my violin.......

I agree 100 % bishop, things are going up. I see it every day when shopping. And I love what this owner is trying to do. He’s having different tournaments every day of the week. 9 ball, 10 ball, league nights, etc. and I so wanted to be a part of this. Belong to something, be a regular, so when I walked in people would say that old guy is a pretty good player.

but 13.50 a hour??? That is so far out of the realm of decency, it’s just wrong in my book.

and I have a newly refelted diamond at my house, I was just really going to get out of the house for a while and support this guy.

i just couldn’t do it. 💰💰💰💰

Big Dog's had more players in it last night than I've seen in over a year. Good prices, too.

But they've been making money for the past year, as opposed to so many others that couldn't.

I'm a former room owner, 10 years ago, 30 then 26 tables. I always say support your local pool room but most likely they will adjust as they have to sell table time, bar time as well. No money in food, that's more of a necessity. We had free pool in the daytime from 11 til 6 with a $6. food purchase. I wish them well, it's not easy, give them time to adjust to their new biz and keep paying a visit. Too many pool rooms disappear. I wish I had one close to me.

Hope you are doing well sir!

Too rich for my pockets, that's a shame.

Here in the h at big tyme it's less than 3an hr until 6 pm , every table big or small diamond or shimmed pocket gc

Well location & cost of operation is what set prices. If your Pool Room is in high rent district, rates will reflect cost of operation. If your in some slum neighborhood, well the cost of operation should be less.

Having had a small business many many years, I was very aware of the cost of daily operation. People who have not had a business do not realize all the cost of operation like.

Business License.

Fees associated with have sign.

Rent, or Mortage.

Insurance.

Phone.

Fax.

Wi-Fi.

Water.

Electricity.

Cost of furnature, pool tables, house cues, halk, ball, ball cleaner

Clean supplies, toilet paper, paper towels, and this is part of the cost.

None of the items mentioned above are FREE.

Go back plant your flag, become a reliable regular....make sure you tip and go out of your way to be nice to the workers. At some point your time and $ invested will pay off in specials official and unofficial. As others said it is possible the rate will go down.

Don't care, too expensive

Hate to say it, $13.50 is fair. I was paying six an hour in nineteen seventy. That wasn't in super primo places either. Rent has doubled, other expenses have doubled, tripled, or worse. Those pool tables take up a lot of square footage and the truth is the owner can take them out and put in almost anything else and make more money.

The owner will either get in line with rentals other places or go under. Might go under anyway! I had a business, the wholesale price of components I was selling had doubled, the retail price had halved. I held prices on the main profit items as long as I could but when you can buy the same thing two doors down much cheaper it was hard for me to hold the line. Sold my land and building and went away.
