I knew yesterday there would be a voluminous thread on AzBilliards Discussion Forum about Earl being chosen for Team USA.
Here's my thoughts. It is important to remember the existing lot of American professional players is dwindling each year. To be honest, this could be our last Mosconi Cup if American pool does not gain in popularity and produce some new blood.
It has already been announced that Justin Bergman will not be attending by Emily Frazer. Some say it's a political move by Matchroom. I say it's Justin's choice. One year, he had health issues, and I have been told he absolutely does not like to fly in airplanes, so I do understand. I don't either.
There is another American pro who is out of the running for undisclosed reasons.
Who does that leave? I can see Oscar and Tyler at this juncture. Tyler is actively shooting in tournaments, currently ranked 8th on WPA scale. Oscar is running a business in California, but he's still shooting.
Earl Strickland is also still shooting pool actively in various events. Say what you want about him, he puts 100 percent effort into practice and competition. USA does not have a lot of choices, and I think he was a logical choice.
Of course, Matchroom et al. know that his selection would bring a lot of attention to this year's Mosconi Cup, good and bad. Personally, love him or hate him, I think Earl Strickland deserves a modicum of respect as an American champion who's held the best player category in USA for longer than anybody else to date. Shane gets along with Earl, and that's a bonus.
Rather than tear him apart on flame threads, maybe we should try to support Team USA. I hate to sound like Ms. Debbie Downer, but this could be the beginning of the end of pool as we know it. Matchroom is already going to create a UK Open tournament simulating the US Open. Soon all things great in the pool world will be in Great Britain. That's great for some folk, not so great for others. I am annoyed that the photos they choose for Earl on Matchroom ads have a not-so-flattering Earl face. Why not choose a better one? Matchroom is going to milk it for all they can get, at Earl's expense.
Long live Earl Strickland and American pool. I'm going to be a loyal fan for as long as I can and hope Team USA can
prove all the naysayers wrong. Let's try to pump up the team instead creating all the negativity before they even get started. USA, ALL THE WAY!
