Lots of guesses, and your customer will claim he kept it in a perfect environment.

I would stay by saying that there is evidence of poor adhesion, not uncommon on oily wood. There also looks to be shrinkage issues. Look for evidence of the cue hitting things. Check how straight it is.

I have a feeling it was stored in a damp, cold place often.

If you are removing the old finish it shouldn't matter what happened before. Using your tried and true methods it should work as well as any other cue you have finished. The wood under there doesn't discriminate.

Maybe. Maybe not. What if there was silicone spill at Mr. Perry's shop?

i have a few old dufferin 1 piece cues that have that exact same issue. lol i keep them out the shop. concrete floor cold drafty hot in the summer cold in the winter. cue was likely abused.

Well I guess there are a lot of what if's it would probably be safest to pass on the work.

No has become my best friend the older I get.

I'd say this, or protect yourself. Agree to limited liability if the situation repeats.

It's a tough position to potentially be subject to problems others cause. With a reasonable customer, one can explain the situation and likely come to something.

Not sure why but haven't received any notices there was posts on here.

Your right it was stored in a case in the garage hot/cold for years

Someone mention it could be a UV Curing finish and that is almost certainly the type of finish used. UV finishes as a whole have adhesion issues and any kind of bump or the extreme environment changes mentioned make issues common. Just sand it completely off and make sure you get a good seal coat on it before putting your finish on.

I have never had an adhesion issue with Solarez UV finish and I have beat a test piece with a hammer and there was no chipping or delamination .........................
