When my daughter was born I realized that continuing my addiction to golf would harm my relationship with my daughter in terms of time stolen by being gone all day for 2 or 3 days a week. I quit golf and bought a table to have some "guy time" that I could enjoy anytime I had a moment at home without taking quality time away from my family and especially my daughter.

I have had my table for over 20 years. I have taken lessons a few times, and for the last year have had a regular coach, not because I ever intend to play competitively, but because I just really enjoy playing, and the better I play, the more I enjoy the game. For 20 years, I have played pretty consistently daily. Sometimes just a rack or two in the evening, but ordinarily about an hour a day. Sometimes just drills, sometimes just 8 ball, sometimes just 9 ball.

I play mostly alone and have never been in a league because I am just not in to the bar life and there is no other option within hours of my home.
Really I wish I could be in a league environment to test my skills. Now that my daughter is grown, I could take the time to be involved. None of my close friends own a table or play seriously. Still, I really enjoy the table and the play is relaxing. When friends come over to play that is just icing on the cake.
Did your daughter end up taking to the game as they got older? My 5 year old has her own cue and she will shoot some shots in the side pockets then she gets bored. I am hoping as she gets a older she will wanna play more with me.

I have an over sized 8 (8.5') Olhausen with 4 3/8" pockets and 860HR in the basement. I usually end up playing at my buddy's shop on his 7' Valley with Penguin pro cut rails with 4 1/4" pockets and 860HR. The guys that hang out there get really competitive so the shop is more fun. There's no mercy there, just pool players trying to kick some serious ass.

I do like being able to just work on drills and such in my basement, or play games with my wife. Around here, everything is 7' Valley bar boxes. I feel like I'm much better at longer shots and aiming true when I have been practicing on my table. If my aim is failing me for whatever reason, it feels easier to diagnose in the basement as faults are easier to spot on a larger table. If I'm going to do a local tournament (always 7'), I'll purposely practice on my table to get tuned in before the tournament. I don't have much trouble adapting to 7' and the extra care required on the large table transfers over.

Having a table during the initial phases of the pandemic helped keep me sane. At that time, my nephew was living in a furnished room in our basement so we got a lot of playing in. We would go to work, get home, listen to music or podcasts and just play pool.

I had certainly hoped so... like you, I bought her own cue for her, and bought a set of "Mickey and Minnie" pool balls. She was never really interested though. Now days she wants to play occasionally but never seriously.

I had a Brunswick Brentwood growing up then a week after we bought a house with space for a pool table I bought a Gandy Big G with "wood grain." I put wood grain in quotes because the wood grain didn't really look like any kind of wood found in nature. Not even close. I think they modeled the wood grain after the wood grain found on 1960s Ford Country Squire wagons. Then in about 1991 I bought an Olhausen Innsbruck which I still have. I love it. The (real) wood is beautiful and the cushions play very true for banking. Sometimes I go to the basement juts to look at it. I could afford to buy a Diamond but I'm not even tempted. (Olhausen haters need not respond, please let me live my dream!)

I have 2 home tables, a 9' and a 7'. If I had to go to a pool hall to shoot I would play very seldom since the closest pool hall is 30 minutes away. Many locals that I shoot with also come over to play.

Just food for thought. If you were a golfer or tennis player could you own a golf course or championship tennis court?
The answer is no. We are pool players and we can own championship equipment. It is not out of the reach of most players. If not now certainly later. It should at least be a goal.

real pro equipment is nice. So nice.
