I'm watching a real the 9-ball tournament presented my Matchroom Pool today on YouTube. You know. a real tournament not the spot shot shootout festival they played over the weekend. I've just discovered that I really like not needing to listen to commentators tell me shit that already know or don't need to know. I think David Alcaide and Naoyuki Oh know how to play the game better than two commentators up in the box who don't play the game as well as they do telling me how they should play their shots. If the commentators were as good as the contestants they would be on the table instead of them. I don't give a shit about a debate as to whether a player should go one or two rails as long as they get there. Also, not having to listen to stories of Cornbread Red from Danny Deliberto is priceless. I like hearing the ref give the score and the sounds of the balls but humans telling me what my eyes can easily see - I can live without that.

From what I can tell there are three reasons that people enjoy watching pool:
1. Entertainment
2. Instruction
3. Social connection
As a content creator where it gets tricky is that different people have different preferences. Your opinion is totally valid but based on the trends it’s in the minority.
Most people enjoy good commentary that is informative and engaging. More and more are becoming interactive as well, with people commenting in chat groups to the commentators and each other. This transforms the viewing experience into a social experience where it is like watching with friends instead of by yourself.
It’s interesting to hear from people as to what they enjoy, but the market has a way of figuring this out. The streams that captivate the most views thrive. Not everyone gets exactly what they want but no one is owed anything and everyone is free to produce their own content as well. We’ll see how things trend over the next few years as technology continues to open doors.

Even though I get irritated by bad commentators I still would rather be annoyed then silence. Pool hall noises and balls being pocketed is ok but a dead mic just bothers me.
I have been thinking, we have lots of pool instructors and videos on how to play the game but it would be cool to see instruction on commentating matches. We have a hall in Denver that has some fun matches to watch and decent streaming equipment but the commentating leaves a lot to be desired. I feel like letting the folks know what I feel is appropriate for discussion and what should be left out.
I not sure how I would go about telling them when I don't wish to piss them off when they don't get paid much and probably don't know how they come across to the viewers.
It would be interesting for good commentators to give seminars on the subject at tourneys or YouTube videos.

I'm sure Matchroom's commenators on Table1 that you had to pay for, or pirate, had the same exact level of commentary as the Predator event. Don't call a race to five of 9 ball a real tournament. Besides, they call it League Pool. Too funny.
Now yes, no Danny stories or stupid childish shootouts are always a good thing.

You are probably in a pretty small minority. Two things I can't really watch in pool matches, silence and 7 footer events. In fact I often start to pay attention more to the commentary than the match after a few viewings, to reinforce any knowledge the commentators put out.
Think the other thing I see in Accustats at DCC is referee who seem so close to players.

You might be happy but I think you’re a bit selfish also....there’s a lot of people in this world...some of them can’t hit the end rail, but would like to get better. Commentators are good for these people sometimes. Some watchers don’t even play but would like to know what’s going on.

Great commentators in pool are few and far between. JJ gets it as well as Ra Hanna. I cannot stand some of the others chatting aimlessly on about ex girlfriends, food and all sorts of unrelated topics. They seem to chat way to much also..
I'm sure I have left out a few others that are very good as well. I know it must be difficult to remain in the present for hours on end and maybe that should be addressed in order to improve things. Hopefully pool does have a renaissance and the great commentators will rise to the top along with the sport!

Couldn't agree more.
Commentators ruin it almost every time.
The problem is, as easy as it is to turn down the volume, when you do you lose all the ambient sounds.
I turn down the volume anyway and watch it like that.
I forgot but I think the Alison Chang channel has fewer commentators but you get all the sounds.
