Well, thank you Mr. 3 cushion! I have said all along that Willie could run a 1,000 if he was paid to do that- no doubt. This interview provides much testament to that belief. He was one of the most, if not the most dominating figures in a sport or game over the longest period of time that the world will ever know.
This business of crowning new " Hi- run" champions makes for entertainment for the relatively small audience that is left in the world of straight pool and maybe a few dollars along the way - but I would hope that those folks do not lose sight of the only meaningful achievements in sport- how does one fair in a competitive environment against the best in the world- this interview sheds much light on Willie Mosconi being considered the greatest sports competitor in history.

Only Greenleaf can logically be compared to Mosconi. For those like me who saw Sigel and Mizerak at their best, the truth is that they are not even in the conversation for greatest ever straight pooler. They never ran over elite fields the way Willie did.

It always surprises me in discussions of Mosconi's exhibitions that no one mentions the manual dexterity with which he set up complex trick shots. I would almost wager that not a single rack at last weekend's five-day tournament in Cincinnati was racked in less time that Mosconi took to set up trick shots for which most guys need a straight edge and a protractor.

Onofrio Lauri who competed in the Mosconi/Greenleaf era said that he would take Greenleaf in one game against anybody but he would take Mosconi in multiple games because he was so consistently good.
I played Mosconi an exhibition match in 1964.
It wasn't much of a contest but to see him cut through racks so smoothly was something to see in person.
I did rack the balls as good as he ran them.

To finish my above post ha ha , during the Legends of pocket billiards tournament on ESPN many year's ago . He truly had a gift !
