Placing A Spot

So, what is the current philosophy on the best technique to accurately mark and place a spot?

In the past I have seen mechanics use a chalk string to mark up a table for the spot. (Can't remember if it was blue or white chalk.) Is that still the preferred method or is there something new?

9ft=50"×100" half of that is 50"×50". Center of that is 25" from the end rail, 25" from both side rails to the center, bingo, right there is where the spot goes. Strings are use for those that don't know how to measure the table! A Gold Crown don't have a center Diamond on the head rail, so then what, where do you line up your string then? The Diamonds on the head rail are 25" apart, so the center Diamond would be half of the 25" being 12 1/2' on center between those 2 diamonds, or sights. The table is mathematical, why wouldn't you measure out where the spot gets placed?

Not sure if it is true or not but I was told the dot on the "I" in the Brunswick nameplate is the center diamond for the headrail on a Gold Crown.

i am not sure that is true
ASSUMING the nameplate is in the center of the short rail
the "S" is in the center of brunSwick
so i would assume its the S thats in the center
it appears to be that way on my gold crown1

You are forgetting the boxed "B" with the crown to the right of "Brunswick" which causes "Brunswick " to be off center to the left putting the "I" in play to be dead center. Again, I could be wrong and what I heard a wive's tale.

this is how the nameplate looks on my table

Looking at this pic closer, it looks like your table may have originally had the early Gold Crown I plastic nameplate that was pried off (see marks on the top side of the nameplate) and replaced with the incorrect metal nameplate. The early plastic easily cracked so Brunswick switched to the metal nameplate (see my post above) early on in Gold Crown I production.

Not unless it was drilled for the 2 mounting screws first, and counter sunk from the bottom side for the screw washers.

Just confirmed the dot of the “I” in the Brunswick nameplate on my Gold Crown I is 12.5” from the left and right Diamond thus making it the center diamond.
