2022 World Cup of Pool Draw: Thoughts and Predictions Thread

Spain tiki-taka their way to final with impressive display. Both execute all aspects so well and are so consistent. If they win this year, they may go on to replicate the success of Spain in world football a decade ago.
Singapore (especially Toh) turns it on at right time, 5 B&R in 1 match probably highest by any team this year

If Spain plays Singapore in 10 matches, Spain will win most of it. But this is only 1 match. More pressure on Spain while Singapore has nothing to lose. If Singapore and the table breaks as well as it did just now, they win. Otherwise Spain will win.

Either way, it is good to have a first time winner and also first time finalists this year-always good to spread the trophies around so this event continues to be competitive

Singapore Chinese are bilingual, multilingual. It is a Commonwealth country and all Commonwealth countries have proficiency in English

sure, but communication, like flowing water, seeks the paths of less resistance. i assume they don't speak the same brand of chinesish

I'm not convinced they'll stay on top, but timing is everything, so it's possible. In 2022, Francisco Sanchez-Ruiz has been consistently brilliant, but David Alcaide has run very hot and cold. Right now, however, David is in his peak form, coming off a very impressive showing at the UK Open (until running into a very in-form Josh Filler in the semis), which makes this team incredibly strong. All the credit to Team Spain. They're on fire.

All that said, I'm not so sure they'd have been favored over Orcullo/Biado or Wu/Zheng, teams that circumstance sadly obstructed from participation.

The path of least resistance in Singapore is English. It's the language of government, education, business and commerce as well being the de facto national language. It would be incredibly unusual for someone of Yapp's age to prefer Mandarin or a dialect over English as a primary means of communication. Hence it makes sense that he speaks to his coach/playing partner (who is actually not old, despite being the oldest player in the WCOP) in English rather than Chinese.

Actually, the "national" language of Singapore is still Malay which I expect both of them understand and speak at least a bit and possibly much more. But it comes as no surprise that they speak to each other in English.

It would be awesome for someone to do a pool travelogue series where they travel around the world playing pool in different locales (like the food shows, but with pool). It's really amazing the number of great players from all corners of the globe.

Closest thing we’ve gotten to that was Ronnie traveling around America playing pool with various pros.

Fund me. I'll do it.

Yes, but Orcullo/Biado don't have the fortune to play together in WCOP. Was supposed to play this year. Philippines keeps changing/rotating personnel every year like Taiwan. Heard that Wu playing Chinese 8 ball and winning some events so doubtful he will be returning to 9ball anytime soon even if he can travel.
I think Austria Albin/Mario can stop Spain Alcaide/FSR though if Albin/Mario are paired again
Finals start at 1pm EST. Spain vs Singapore. I'm rooting for the underdog, Singapore. It would be nice to see an older gentleman on the winning team.
Actually am enjoying that new Jeff Bridges thriller "The Old Man".
Don't mind either team. Hope it is hill hill thriller

Congrats to Spain. Well Done !
