"legends" of today

I was remembering how much fun it was watching the old "Legends" events on TV. Made me wonder, who would be the legends of today?

Sixty-five or older, who are your picks as legends? The player should still have solid skills although obviously not the equal to their best years, and as importantly has to be entertaining to watch. Minnesota Fats was always entertaining. So was UJ Puckett. Put them on the same table and it was magic!

Name as many as you like, one or a bunch. Try to name at least three please.

That's a good list, but you've got to get Keith in there. Who's more entertaining than him?

He would definitely meet all other qualifications but I think he may still be a year or two too young. Maybe, maybe not. This is just a hypothetical thing anyway although I wish somebody would pick up the idea and run with it.

I'd go with these for sure:

Efren Reyes
Mike Sigel
Nick Varner
Jim Rempe
Allen Hopkins
Buddy Hall

... and just to be fair, let's give a shout out to the 80-something legends still in our midst.

Ray Martin
Dallas West
Dan DiLiberto

Stu,

While I value everyone's input I was hoping to lure you out knowing you would have a great list. If more that you don't see listed cross your mind please don't hesitate to post them.

I was thinking about Dan, should have thought about Ray having talked to him a few times over the years. He and Dallas completely slipped my mind. That is why I asked for other people's input. It would be great to rustle up a new set of legends. Artistic billiards shooters and ladies could fit in here too.

I laughed when a youngster watched an old Japanese gentleman shooting trick shots on TV including the wickedly hard bottle to bottle shot. The youngster wasn't impressed, "I have seen most of those before." I told him, "yeah but now you have seen the man that invented the shots shooting them!"

I dunno why have the 65+ stipulation. No bigger legend than Earl out there. Who cares if he 61? A lot of the guys on the senior tour in golf are legends and you just gotta be 50 for that. Lotta great pool players still kicking around, but Earl is my favorite by a country mile. No need to wait four years to include him as a living legend.

I am not sure Buddy will be able to play with those guys if they did a match, especially Efren and Earl, and I think Sigel shoots pretty strong still. Mostly due to his physical shape. I'd love to see a senior's tour again, or even a "Classic Mosconi" with members from the first 10 or 15 events.
