why do some pros fly to England for the tournament, when they have a small chance of winning?

Keith Thompson won the Allround at the 1970 Johnston City with a borrowed cue.
Mohamed Soufi almost captured first prize in his first major 9-ball tournament.
……you'll never know if you don’t try

That Soufi win was really something to see. He just kept winning.

That's the crazy thing about pool. When your runout game is strong, work on the break and safeties....all you gotta do is keep the monsters in the chair and it doesn't matter who they are.

There are ranking points for more than just the top 10. Also, in big majors like this, it is big if you can outlast other people from your country. Shane Wolford is a great example of this. Was one rack away from getting to the quarter finals. On paper he probably doesn't beat filler but you never know. But, the exposure of getting that far and being the next to last US player out ensures he had the 2nd highest amount of ranking points for Mosconi Cup. He could not win a single major tournament, but get enough ranking points/exposure that puts him on Mosconi cup.

It's like the old saying, you can't win it, if your not In it.
Pool is one of those games, in theory you could pull an upset, on any of the big names, regardless of there fargo. You play the balls not the opponent. You keep the other guy in the chair. With a bit of luck you never know. It could be your day.

Enjoyed watching the UK tournament on you tube this weekend. My question is this: the line up was the best of the best, the top 10 players in the world. Filler, ko brothers, Ruiz, Boeing, ect ect. Why do pros who are on a level below these killers attend this tournament? And I’m not naming names, thats not my point. That’s a lot of money to spend to get to England, hotel, food, transportation, ect. And they never get close to winning?

And they all do the same pattern: win their first match, lose the second, win their first match on the loser side, maybe win two or more. Then lose and they are out.

I know anybody can do as they please, and i get that. But it just seems to be an unproductive week to me.

And I’m not trying to be a butthead about this subject, just trying to figure it out. I can’t even think of a MAJOR tournament that a lower level pro has every won?
Tell me you have no heart without telling me you have no heart!!! 😉

Takes all kinds. Remora eat pretty good. Following the money is just part of the industry. I think for serious players there's no substitute for what the climb puts in your chest.

When you say lower level Pro's do you mean all american players other than SVB? If thats your point then they have to go if they want to face the best in the world and elevate their game, if not then we'd only see SVB as he is really the only US player with world class speed and you cant get close to his level playing the same familiar people in the same comfortable environments.

Most of these players are sponsored and the sponsors are paying the way.

Do you think that Savanna Easton is winning a major tournament right now? No, she's a cute kid that sells products.

I'm curious if you are still inclined to ask this question after listening to this song

There are also some intangibles, such as helping a player build a local brand to be able to charge for lessons. Being able to call yourself a "pro" (whether your level warrants that rating or not) lends some credence to be able to charge for lessons. I know a low level female player who plays the WPBA tour who charges $70 an hour for lessons, which is based on the fact she is a "pro" on the WPBA tour.
In addition and as mentioned before their trip may be at least part funded by sponsors if you are displaying their brand and/or using their products.
Good luck to those who are able to play these tournaments knowing that what they are spending to play is dead money, at least they are doing something they enjoy.
