Shafts in case, tips up or down?

Does the tip go up or down in a case?

Another vote for tip down, and wipe chalk off before putting in case. I used to do it on the pool room carpet, but switched to a napkin later.

Tip down especially if you don't use joint protectors. If up chalk dust get on your joint face and gums it up. If on one side of the joint face more than the other your cue could roll off

As hinted previously, Pin down/tips up in George, Centennial or Fellini cases. Fatter butt cues will lodge in the liner when put pin up, and you CANNOT get them out without yanking the whole liner out. You only do that once.

I agree tips up keeps a cleaner case as you are not blindly stabbing Mr. Chalky Tip haphazardly.

JBs, I tend to put tips down as I like to see my joint protectors as my shafts are numbered/coded.

Wow, we need to buy tip covers now? I'm way behind, I still don't even use JPs. LOL
I don't use them either , I have never seen a damaged pin with normal use. Now some people can get a bit anal and do stupid things to their cues, but to me joint protectors are a pita.

I've had to repair several shafts for customers that didn't use JPs and ended up with chips in their joint rings. $5 fix for a $50 problem. I prefer to take care of my expensive stuff.

I agree and if I had higher dollar stuff I already would have.

The cue can be fumbled and damaged anytime the two pieces are being handled just prior to screwing them together. JP’s are really not a fix for that potential mishandling of the cue. I’ll buy the handle to help pull them out of the case, or for the aesthetics function, but really the protection deal is a real stretch when a case is being used properly.

playing for longer than many of you are alive. never had seen any problem putting your cue in anyway you want.

have had a cue permanently in my cars and trucks, same cue for 50 years in 100 plus degrees hot and minus 30 degrees cold in a soft cheap case and its still straight

the only thing about putting tip down and butt down is if you get one stuck you can screw on it and pull it out.

It really doesn't matter whether it's tip up or tip down, but the case should be stored vertically. I've straightened out a few warped shafts just by storing them upright, and playing them, giving them table time. Some cases accept either way, some don't.

All the best,
WW

When I bought my case, Jack Justis told me to store cues "joint protectors up".

After I clean the exotic tips on the nice pool room's carpeted floor, they go in tip up so they can breath, out of respect for the baby seal's sacrifice.
Lovely... at least you don't spit tobacco juice all over the carpet also. Or do you?

In the pockets but only if it has a ball return. Little known fact- Ball returns were actually invented as a long random maze to dry tobacco spit off the ball. They soon realized that if they made it stop at the foot of the table , it was also handy for gathering the balls. Also the reason why balls yellow over time. You’re welcome

Yes technically either tip up or tip down will hold the shaft in the case and you can still put it out (although I think trying to grab the sides of the ferrule to pull out a shaft takes a bit more effort) but think of it as the toilet roll debate, over or under? Clearly you can make do with both, but over is the most efficient and easier to use. Or using a spoon to eat a steak, you can still get the chunks in your mouth that way, but you are not being as efficient.
