Seems like every time I fire up the computer lately I read somebody croaked. Glad to do a wellness report for one of the nicest guys in pool! Joe is in Minnesota these days, giving a few lessons, selling a few DVD's. Doing fine with the overall health and such. We have played phone tag a few years, we finally caught up on the phone at least tonight. Maybe I'll fire up the eighty quart pot outdoors and try to catch one of those storm fronts that have been sweeping the country headed his way. A good whiff of seafood on the fire ought to start a stampede headed this way, including Joe!

Joe sells three or four DVD's and as I have done almost forever seems like, I recommend them highly. The first two I kind of alternated between "wow" and being mad. A person could spend three to six months hard work with those DVD's and learn what took me three to five years to learn blundering around with very little mentoring. After talking to Joe I realized there was nobody better to put the info on video and explain it.

Joe is the house pro up there, I think at CR's Sports Bar, Coon Rapids, Minnesota. If I was in the area I would be trying to set something up. Joe is a proven player, a proven instructor able to turn out winners too, not always the same thing!

Joe has been on AZB in the past and I'm thinking we may be able to tease him onto the forum again. Joe is the perfect formula for a member. He is an old road player that has walked the walk, now he has mellowed out and may be ready to talk the talk. The forums seem pretty mellow at the moment too, discussions instead of futile arguments.

I’ve had a lot of fun with L’il Joe at a number of sbe’s. We would have kick-a-thons on the table at his booth. He said they were good for business.

What a gem of a guy he is. And miles of road stories…

I think you can buy everything at PoolIQ.net That is Pool Intelligence Quotient dot net to stretch it out. The link probably works, a little hard to read with the ending L in pool and the I in IQ looking just the same. A .net site, not com too. Worth the aggravation I think.

Miss running into Joe on my trips Davenport.
Really enjoyed talking about things including Pool.
He taught me his Clock which was a big expansion on my Clock.

So I was looking at his site after your post last night. I was more interested in the second video. But given what you say should I get both? What do you think is the best way to approach his information?
 
I was lucky at this year’s Derby City Classic when Hunter Lombardo introduced me to Joe at breakfast. Joe is a lovely, congenial and humble man and I wish him everything good.

While at the SBE some twenty years ago with my wife at the time, we came upon his booth area as he was giving demos and selling his DVDs.

She was so impressed with his teaching skills (she was an elementary school teacher) that she bought his DVD(s) and he continued to spend time with her (about 30 mins) as she watched and learned that day. At home she would spend about an hour a day watching and executing on our home table. She was a skill level 3 in the APA and she was able to transfer what she had learned onto several of her matches that she impressed her opponents and credited Joe's DVDs.

I would buy the first two together. Different information but much the same style. The third is actually two DVD's and is like you are sitting in on one of his three day lessons, edited down of course. It is a completely different style.

In the interest of full disclosure, Joe gave me the third DVD offering out of the blue. It is of Joe working with a single student on enough variety of shots that it is easy to learn and not get bored. It is also unintentionally a great advertisement for Joe's lessons. There are some instructors that aren't lacking in knowledge but I know I can't work with them. Joe has the knowledge and I don't think anyone would ever tire of working with him.

With hindsight, I would buy everything Joe has to offer in one shot. I would replace it all that way if I lost it tomorrow. As a sampler, buying the one you are most interested in is a solid approach. I really think it is a slight waste of time and money, buy anything from Joe and I think you will be back for more. On the other hand, focusing on one DVD at a time has merit too. I don't remember which DVD I started with or maybe the first two. These can be misjudged in a hasty fly through. Watching all the way through once is fine but watching bit by bit until you get tired gives much more appreciation of the disks. Using them with a home table or loading them on a phone or larger portable display to work with at a pool hall would be a super way to use them too. While I say three to six months to get something close to full value from these videos, there is serious value from day one.

Something I may experiment with is one of the pool simulators. Haven't tried with Joe's disks but back when I had Freddy's book Banking with the Beard, I had the book and no home table. Using one of the video games, VP3 maybe or one that tried to allow cash matches and tournaments, I don't remember, I practiced the shots at home on the computer just playing. I was surprised to find very little adjustment to shoot the same shots on Diamond blue label tables. I think the same would work for Joe's disks.

As most know, I am an endless advocate of cue ball control. Aside from being one of the nicest guys in pool as the posts on this thread show, Joe knows cue ball! A lot more too but his knowledge of cue ball alone is priceless.

Thanks. I can set up the video by my home table. Sounds like if I do the work (that’s the big word - if) there is a lot of benefit to it. Seeing the clips of the videos I liked how informative they were.

I found the shots to be challenging enough to not get boring. Some very easy, some not. Once you start getting comfortable you can vary things a bit to increase the challenge. Some of the shots are challenging enough that I was pretty happy to just make them.

Something in those last DVD's that I don't remember in the earlier ones, Joe uses blocking balls and gates made from balls to make shots tougher as his student started mastering shots. Clint Eastwood is right, a man should know his limitations and I think anyone will know working these disks.

This gave me a good laugh! I would feel a bit had to be shooting with an APA 3 and them recognizing and shooting shots from the videos! I suspect the team didn't keep the three for long when she was devoting this much time to the disks.

I tried to think of somebody in Minnesota, seemed like I knew someone. I associate Joe with Indiana though and he didn't come to mind. I'd like to spend a day or two with Joe myself, on or off a pool table.

Joe is one of a dying breed who would travel and open the door of a pool hall with no advance intel on anybody. You just did battle and let the chips fall where they may. The longest I did it at a stretch was a couple weeks or so. Might touch base and roll for a few months but I never considered myself a road player. The guys that could do it for months and years at a time and make it work have my utmost respect. Their ranks get thinner every year. Most are already gone.
