WPA bans......................

Josh Filler is such an interesting case. He gets federation support. He also is going to be a player with a top tier sponsorship package. And he has notable tournament winnings from top finishes. Most of his 2023 tournament money looks like it came from the WPA side of the fence where I would have guessed the other side.

honestly this is a sad list to look at. I really hope all this wpa/mr stuff ends up in a lot of money getting pumped in to lure players and we can see another zero on those dollar amounts for a top 10 player in the not too distant future.

And Thorpe was banned 2 years ago for failing a drug test,
When a guy goes out in public like this...

Do you really need a drug test?

So far as I can tell from the WPA constitution each of the seven continental confederations appoints two council members and so in theory there are 14 possible votes cast on any issue. It's on the WPA website. There is -- not surprisingly -- no current continental confederation representing Antarctica, so there should be only 12 votes total. There are "provisional" members that get one vote rather than two but I don't think there is one right now.
On the Window's Open podcast I believe it was Mike P from Billiards Digest was saying ACBS had 1 vote because they were still provisional. In the live comments of that show, someone was swearing up and down that Kelly Fisher had a vote as some sort of player ambassador. And I believe in one of the comments in AZ from a month or so back, I read that the WPBA has a voice in the WPA. I'm not sure if a direct voice or as part of the BCA. All of these I'm iffy on and was hoping someone knew for fact.

Shane's post on FB has 5000 likes and 500 comments. I read a bunch of them, and people are still confusing BCAPL with BCA.
The pool league thing is hilarious. I love SVB and the stance he’s taking. But it’s also funny how much credit he’s getting for being a leader and taking a stance. I assume he’s nearing retirement. And maybe not tomorrow but he’s definitely able to relax and cherry pick his events. He pretty much was already avoiding Predator events. Maybe the short sets. Maybe slug racks. Maybe spot shots. Or maybe just loyalty to his sponsor. So he’s pretty much announced his schedule will be about exactly what it already was going to be minus maybe Las Vegas Open and World 10B.

He finally got his world championship. You have to wonder if his stance might have been different if he hadn’t won in 2022.

WORLD POOL ASSOCIATION PRESS RELEASE

08, October 2023, Doha, Qatar - In conjunction with the 2023 Qatar 9-Ball Open, yet another 300,000 USD event in a record breaking year of the WPA which surpassed a total of 5,000,000 USD in annual prize funds for men and women, the WA General Assembly convened.

The assembly decided to financially support a youth development program in all six regions under the WPA umbrella. This program will provide both financial and training assistance to continue the ongoing growth of the sport globally. Additionally, the WPA then had to deal with a matter that no member was looking forward to discussing, the growing number of non WPA sanctioned events around the world.

The assembly did hear a report regarding a last attempt to a possible solution and to continue communication with promoters to the matter at hand, but the answer was a simple no. That left the assembly with no other alternative than to discuss how to best move forward with the current situation.

After long deliberation the assembly ended up deciding on the following: the players will be given almost five months to choose if they will continue representing their respective national and continental federations under the WPA, or if they elect to participate in only non WPA events and tournaments.

Players participating in non WPA sanctioned events that qualify for WPA sanctioning starting the 1st March 2024 will have the following impact: loss of all WPA ranking points and no further participation in events on a national, continental or global level under the WPA. When a player would like to return to participate in WPA events they will be unable to participate in any event for six months and have a $500 USD fine which will be paid to the player's national federation.

Why does that version say WA over a dozen times instead of WPA? Why is the WPA called the World Pool Association rather than the World Pool-Billiard Association? Has their name changed?

Because it was written by a thousand monkeys on typewriters?

Clearly it's 'the blurst of times' for the WPA

...Love me a cartoon reference

It was the image to text translation. Couldn't find a higher res version of the letter.

It's not perfect.

Like the WPA.

Keep in mind this includes Heyball and women’s events so it won’t be apples-to-apples with the Matchroom slate.

that's one disturbing thing when WPA has been speaking of their year schedule, they say "5 million total prize fund this year" but the biggest post in there, by far, is heyball. it's not even played on american pool tables, it's a different game. dishonest to include it.

another disturbing thing is that they seek up totalitarian or rogue dictatorships to get big time events on the calendar. china open and qatar open, with qatar being the country that houses the hamas leadership and also funds and supports hamas and other terror groups. if that's WPA's modus operandi to grow pool, it's not a very attractive one.

i don't mean to go NPR with this reasoning, remember that WPA always talk about "protecting the players", they say that all the time. but it isn't beyond the scope of possibilities that israel in this current war would have tried to zapp the hamas leaders in doha, and that the pool players in the qatar open, in doha, were in direct harms way.
