the break shot in 9-Ball just kills me anymore. i cant get any decent spreads, dont make balls, end up with hail mary type layouts that only Efren on his BEST day could run out. this has been going on and on and on and on and on for years and years and years and years.

here i have been on vacation since tuesday, not going back until tuesday, and was hoping for some decent spreads/rolls/layouts. and what do i get??? i dont think its ever going to end..............

Best piece of advise. Start breaking from the dead center...and learn how to work your way out to the rail....all the while hitting the one ball square. My break has always been the weakest aspect of my game and when I start breaking bad, or I'm not feeling the timing to hit the one solid off the rail...I go back to center. Works pretty well for me. Just my two cents.

I have had the same problem for some time before getting some help off here, try this: Rack the balls (of course :) ) then place the cue ball behind the headstring, dead on from the head ball (1 ball). Try to make your stick as level as possible with the table. Then act like there is a pocket just behind the rack, and your trying to hit the 1 ball in that pocket, your not trying to kill it, just hit it solid into the pocket. Then when everything is lined up, stare at the cue ball and hit it as dead center as possible. Try slower speeds at first, then work your way up. This has helped my game so much, now I can get pretty good spreads 75% of the time. The main thing is....hit the rack solid!

Hope this helps, Good Luck!

Are you playing people and getting these crappy rolls and what not? Or is this just you playing the ghost?

Dead Money.. I've always wanted to ask you this question:

What kind of mad voodoo monkey english are you putting on that cueball in your avatar to make it stop dead when executing a 45 degree cut????

:D :D :D :D :D

As Einstein said: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. ;)

How fast do you break? If your not breaking 20+ MPH you should get a break coach. 1 hour will work wonders.

That's a stun shot on some really thick nappy slow cloth;):D

Ok............. and maybe some less than perfect animation skillz too:)

By good golly dam...Never ever? ..not one runable table...EVER??!!

Are they still on the spot with one wing ball kicked off the diamond a few inches away? with the cue behind the other 8 balls?

Look DCP...if you are of sound body and a grown ass person you're not venting, you're whining.A cue blowing off the table over and over I can see "venting" over.Scatching on the break over 50% of the time I can see "venting" over....esp if work has been put in to fix those.

But NEVER EVER a good looking table after the break? That aint happening...not in 9 ball.Ever see the pros break soft?

If you can't get out you can't get out,but its not the break shot.

Or just do like lots of people, play 8 ball and convince yourself it's the superior game. Multiple targets after most breaks = less frustration. Practice your break, take a lesson. good luck.

I know this will sound really mean, but I think you should be aware of it - I think you may have a touch of passive-aggressive personality disorder :x
A big characteristic of it is:
"voices exaggerated and persistent complaints of personal misfortune"
And you've done that several times in your posts. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Sorry if I sound like a dick, but you really do give this impression, and it's not a healthy way to be.

As to your breaking problems: I am unusually gifted at coming up dry on the break, something like 60-70% failure rate. But I don't complain because I'm otherwise a good player, and I'm not playing for big money and I can live with being an A with a lame break. The break is important, but it's also a shot that has some luck in it. I'd rather focus on the results of shots that take skill than the results of shots that take some luck. Don't listen when anyone says "better to be lucky than good".

I think you need to play longer and get better before you start venting. If you're not A or even B level yet, almost every aspect of your game is "unfinished". Wait until you 'plateau' ...and if the finished product still sucks, maybe vent then. Until that time, suck it up.

You posted....way back when.....that when you had your lessons with Mark Wilson that he measured your break speed and it was 17mph...

If your break is still only 17mph....then I suggest you quit trying to break the balls and....work...(for hours) on finding a specific part of the rack or end rail to aim the 1-ball at and just shoot the 1-ball into that specific spot....

This will take hours of practice and cause you to rack & break probably 200+ times...or more....but if you actually put in the effort...you will find secific points to shoot at that you can rely on...not only to make balls, but also get better spread results...

I have about 5 different breaks from just the side rail that I use to make a ball....usually one of them will result in a pocketed ball and decent spread......none of them require more than a 17mph break speed....cause that is about my break speed since I don't break the balls...I just shoot the rack.....with a very firm shot....

I've never broke well from the side rail. I've stayed pretty much near the spot for years and I break decent, if I'm playing quite a bit. As someone else suggested, go back near the spot and work from there. If you never break well from the side, stay away from it.

Try this one:

1. Check if the rack is 100% ok
2. Place the cb next (1 inch) to the middle spot
3. Try to hit the 1-ball full or almost full (both works well)
4. Hit the CB slightly below center
5. Don't break too hard, break like a normal hard long pot.

Forgot to add the reason why I always break like this.

1) When the rack is 100% ok, you don't have to break that hard to pot a ball.
2) It gives enough angle to pot a ball when you break
3) Don't know, but it works fine for me
4) You want to stop the CB in the center of the table, so you got the best position to play to your next ball
5) Like I have read before, there is no rule to pot more than 1 ball during the break, so why breaking that hard? If you break too hard, most of the ball will end up on the rails or just ruin the position of the balls.

17 mph?

i break a consistent 23 and i don't always get the best of it.if thats your hardest you need to work on making the 1 ball.

17 mph is plenty to make a good spread. The year Keith did so great at the Open, his fastest breaks were around 19 mph.

The key is not speed, it's control. Hitting the head ball as solid as possible at 10 MPH will generate a good spread.

DCP, I seriously think you need to learn to evaluate yourself. Where does whitey go after you hit the rack? Is the rock spinning after you hit the rack? Questions like those tell you whether or not you're hitting the head ball solid. A good, honest evaluation will go a long way to helping you.

If you can't do a good, honest evaluation, you need to quit this game, because you'll never get any better.

controlling the 1 ball is good but I would rather not make the 1 and make the ball on the side of the rack in the corner. That way I know I'll have a shot on the 1 in the corner.
