Older players... what do you do?

Where did you get yours, if you don't mind me asking?? Optometrists in my area look confused when I ask about specific frames and lenses for pool. Bummer.
Mail order from Canada - billiard-eyeglasses.com. Got mine right the first time and with the exchange rate they're an excellent value.

Good conversation starter. Now it’s time to get down to work! Two words that you’ve heard before - diet & exercise!

I’ll give you an exercise tip that most pool players are totally unaware of. This one is for all of you. Work on your grip to make it stronger! It can be as simple as making a tight fist for thirty seconds to a minute every day. Having a strong grip will improve your stroke and your overall game. I promise you!

P.S. The above does not mean holding your cue tight while playing!
Hand em a foam hand exercise ball, squeeze it while driving. :)

The second part of this exercise which I left out is that after releasing your fist, stretch your fingers all the way out to relieve the tightness you will feel. Give ‘em a good stretch for ten to fifteen seconds. You’ll be fine after that.
Which Pinoy taught you this Jay?

Sometimes I wish I was 150 pounds, just for a day, so I could rub my chin on the cue like Allison fisher, just for one day.
‘but that won’t happen, so I do the best I can. still being muscle bound at at 66, 260 pounds, is not the best frame for shoot pool. I’m probably 12-18 inches away from having my chin on the cue, and that’s as good as it gets. But after playing for 5 years now daily, I have made it work.

I'm 6'2" and have never really been one to get down low on my pool cue , then after having my neck fused twice bending it isn't much of an option it's not going to happen it flat out hurts !

After playing a couple racks with Frank McGown and he showed me a combination of a stance he called of a American / European stance that I continue to use .

Along with the hand stretches I roll my shoulders clockwise then counter clockwise , then stretch each arm as if I was going to scratch the middle of my back doing this nice and slowly seems to help a great deal .

As for arthritis I use a green or red resistance band for my wrist and trigger fingers .
No I'm not complaining one darn bit I made a promise to myself that I'll never sit in a rocking chair and wonder what if ha ha so yes I've earned every ache and pain .

My eye Dr suggested no line trifocals , he's a sick sadistic bugger ha ha after just over a year I'm starting to get used to them , the good part is they sit high enough for me to look to the far end of the pool table and not see the top of the frame .

I used to walk alot and have my arm swinging as if stroking the cue and would close my fist, keep the arm straight and just move the forearm to the elbow at various speeds as if I'm hitting the CB. Somebody asked me how I stay in stroke and I said I walk alot lol. I then showed him by walking up to a wall, stopping where I knew I could lean over and rest my head on the wall lightly and kept my arm swinging. I said there's my stance/stroke in a nutshell.

I got glasses without a bifocal and added a half inch filler of hot melt glue over a skeleton of plastic from a milk carton.View attachment 742689the skeleton loops around the frame at the top and can be rotated up and out of the way. Just enough flex and friction to keep it in place between the pads of the glasses. Works good for me. 🤷‍♂️
Nice adaptation. Creative.
Unfortunately, the guys at my local hall would eat that for dinner if I came in with something like that on my head. Might as well be a sombrero or Derby cap. Lol. Nothing against yours, just totally out of character for me and I'd pay the price there.

Funny thing, I rarely see any of the GOATS from before the 60's/70's getting down on the cue, they are practically standing almost straight up while shooting. Didn't seem to slow them down much.
That's my dad. Lol.
Sweetest stroke I ever saw. Line up, pump and a half for aim and pull trigger. Lol. Like a machine. Same over and over. Wish I would've known what I was seeing back then.
I just recall the smooth motion and tall stance.
Thanks 4 that. Good memories.

I understand. 👍 It fits my M O or desired image. Rodeo Clowns are my favorite athletes and The Jerk is my favorite movie. Go Figure. 🤷‍♂️

Getting back into playing again. Been out of it for a while. I am now 30 lbs heavier than I was, have a belly and not able to get down on shots like I used to. I know losing weight is a start but what else can I do to allow me to bend my neck far enough to look down a cue? I have tried stretching with little success.

What do you all do?
I switched to the Mediterranean diet when my combined cholesterol hit 220. Along with taking statin meds in two years my combined cholesterol was 110. At that point the cut my statin med in half per day.

There is a great website called Oldways it’s a company from Boston one of my doctor’s recommended. They also have a very active Facebook page.

Stay away from fast food chains that food is not healthy…

In 2019 I started playing again after over 15 years.
Went to a pool hall and basically hurt myself.
Sold table and moved homes 16 years before this, daughter felt sorry for me and got a table at their house. 2 years ago I got my own table again.
I tell people pool is my yoga .
I refuse to live vicariously through others.
Yesterday I went undefeated with break & outs & 1 /2 inning games.
Pool is a game like NO other
Still learning and still love the game

This is an extreme measure and maybe not the answer for most but taking up jiu jitsu is 100% beneficial to your pool game, and not just in the physical well being aspect, it’s also a mental game the same as pool. I’ve been doing it for years now and tho pool had nothing to do with why I started, it absolutely changes everything. It enhances your mobility but also changes the way you look at the game. Hesitation is less, panic is less and you worry less. I’ve also heard yoga is good for pool, which I have yet to try but plan to.

Yesrs ago while at the Mr Olympia a friend of mine introduced me to a company called Sweet Sweat, they’re much bigger today than back then. He was friends with the owner and at the time they were one of the first companies selling the neoprene belts you wear around your abdomen. So many products are a gaff these days but that one is legit and is the simplest thing to do. You can wear it while playing and tho it’s not a back support item, it does help with that also.
Gotta be careful training BJJ as an older gentleman, though. I have a chronic shoulder injury from BJJ that actually makes playing pool much harder. But I think I can see what you mean about that sort of thing for the mental side of pool.

Now yoga, that I fully endorse for pool and just life in general. It took me a bit to desensitize myself to the goofy new agey hippie energy of it, but damn does it feel good on your joints, muscles, and brain. If you can get past that part, I absolutely recommend it to anybody.

most of the older players shoot more upright. for one of two reasons.

one, is that is the way they always played and did fine with it

two, getting down so low gave them severe back problems when they got older.

you get to pick one of the two ways, your choice.
