I’m watching the us 10 ball which is being streamed on open window on facebook and youtube and I’m reminded not long a go how bad we had it.
-Playing a pro tournament in the middle of a pool Hall. Griffs is a great place but it’s not the location for a pro tournament anymore.
-Commentators who are nice guys who love the game but far from professional. Lost track of the score at times.
-people just walking by the table. At one point while svb is down shooting a guy in an electric scooter rolls by the table and just stops. Someone has to come up to him and tell him that people are playing pool in case he didn’t notice and keep moving.

I appreciate the stream really. It’s free But how can anyone complain about silly things like the color of the 4 ball when you have all the other great things going on with it. A professional atmosphere. Referees at every table. Great equipment. payouts that our constantly increasing and players don’t have to wonder if they are going to get paid. Professional commentators. Just the feel of great players being treated like great players should.

I hope this is the last we are seeing of this kind of pro tournament Because I for one never want to go back.

Yes, the 4 ball is fine. No problem. It's the color of the 5 ball (purple when it should be orange) that's destroying the game.

Where's Fatboy when you need him?
lol that’s right. See how little I care about that silly thing 😂

I will cut them a break....The free Youtube streams are low budget pool enthusiasts content creators (relying on Patreon Sponsoship) to bring free coverage to fellow pool players......IIRC....some of the commentators are not even on-site....they are actually sitting at home connected in with other commentators (that may also not even be on site) to bring coverage....

As far as Griffs being the venue....I do agree...the "US Open" should have been held at a professional venue of some sort.

Oh yeah and the stream is free. They aren’t without knowledge of the game and they seem to love it. It just feels like a step backwards is all.

There are + and - to every single thing in this world. Pool tournaments are not immune to that. Both fit in just fine. Every tournament and every venue is its own living breathing thing.
I’m not sure what that has to do with the discussion. You wouldn’t see the pga having a pro tournament at your local muni lol I don’t want to go back to seeing pool players playing in a pro tournament at a pool hall.

There simply are different kinds of events. All have merit. Added money should not be scoffed at.

Promoters that have a place to host an event at 0 or very little cost are incentivized to host the event at that place regardless if you respect it or not. Griff’s is a great venue. It’s not a grand ballroom but it’s a great place to have a tournament. And the players get more money in their pockets when the promoters of the events they promote spend less on the venue.

Every event will not be sponsored by match room or the like and that is completely fine.

I’m guessing you’d rather just not have it though.

on topic: this event will mainly be niche disciplines that unfortunately don't draw enough crowd/viewers to an arena setting anyway. it's 10b now but then banks, one pocket etc. its usually a small affair with low median fargo but this year, because of it piggybacking the predator events, it's gonna be star studded! i'm really looking forward to the one pocket

I get the jist of what you are saying....However...... Bethpage Black is actually a municipal golf course......And the US Open is actually kind of the exception in that they tend to hold the event on more "'public access" golf courses.....

Granted....just like a Super Bowl game stadium......Any course that holds the event gets a MAJOR overhaul prior to the event.

Rob, I appreciate your point of view but the fact remains that there are at least 12-15 major poolroom tournaments held in this country every year, which attract top fields of pool talent. Typically you are looking at anywhere from ten to twenty thousand in added monies. Usually they pair a big One Pocket tourney with either a 9-Ball or Ten Ball event. Winning players are walking away with some nice five figure scores and the Calcutta payouts go through the roof! Money is flowing in these events, high rollers abound and there is non stop action! As for me I love these events and wish I could attend more. Each one is a like a mini version of DCC, with no holds barred. I call it Old School Pool!

In CO last yr at Piazza's.... a first, the Calcutta total was over $51,000 for a bar table 96 player event.
Never in my past 50 yrs here has CO ever had more than 16K in the pot.

I love these kinds of tournaments. It is certainly a nice change of pace. As someone said in another thread, even with the MR produced events, very few, if anyone, wants to see the same Major tournament over and over just on different soil. Every tourney should be unique and have its own unique vibe. These type tournaments pay as good or better than many larger, better produced tournaments and the players seem to flock to them. If it helps keep some "American" flavor in pool, I'm all for it.

As for that dang purple five ball...

I believe the calcutta at Buff’s 1pocket event last year was just shy of $300K.

Personally I feel there’s much to be said for different tournament flavors and an all MR line up would be a boring and sad state of affairs for the game.

When watching tournament events like the US10 Open Ball Championship they just seem overly sterile for lack of a better term.

I had to laugh too when the poor older guy in the scooter went by the SVB-FSR match. Shane seemed to feel bad when somebody asked the guy to move after he parked between tables.

All in all, I enjoyed what I watched and having Fedor in the booth helped give some insight on the playing.
