2024 World Pool Championship

Too far away!

It's year one for this event in its new location, hopefully interest in the sport will grow in Saudi Arabia. Yes, the empty seats are a bit distressing, but pool's business model can hold up with or without live attendance. Still, whether it is pool or any other sport, it is hard to view an event as important if nobody attends.
That’s not what I heard …..you smoked a camel once….they consider that a felony over there.

I though Scott Frost was outstanding in the booth. Yes, he still needs some a little more seasoning, but he offers some nuanced insights into the more technical aspects of decision making that are fresh and new. Looks like Matchroom made a very good decision to bring him onto their commentary team.
I prefer Scott to JJ. There. I said it. Cadence aside, the JJ monotone lulls me to sleep.

Great final. I would love to know what was going through Fedor's mind when they played the Star Spangled Banner for him.

I was certainly proud of him and proud that he represents the US.

I couldn't help but smile seeing the affection Fedor and Johann have...it is a shame MR removed him as the US coach after back to back MC wins. Do any of thebother US players have full time coaches like that?

After having been banned by WPA on the basis of his Russian nationality alone, I'd like to believe he was thinking that he has made a very nice life and career for himself in America. Hearing the "Star Spangled Banner" may have reminded him of that.

As you know, the American fans have really warmed to Fedor and while it can be argued that he's not an American yet, he will be one of these days and America couldn't be prouder to have him.

That may very well have been the most exciting finish to a tournament ever. My 11-year old daughter was sweating every ball with me from when Fedor was up 13-10 all the way through the hill-hill rack, the win, and the award ceremony. She had me explaining everything including what play-by-play and what color commentary is. She was so thrilled when afterward I showed her this picture. We were rooting for Freddy G. She shouted with joy when Kaci scratched. LOL

It was so damn funny in the ceremony when Kaci grabbed the mic a second time and said “And by the way. I won the World 10-ball Championship twice.” What he really meant was “Put some respect on my damned name!”

Why are they playing the US anthem?

It should be the Russian anthem.

Fed up of this woke agenda ruining sport.
Pretty sad that you can find a way to turn one of the greatest finals we’ve seen in a while into some sort of political statement. Particularly when you seem ignorant of the circumstances around what you’re even complaining about…

I’d say he’s a lock for the Mosconi Cup this year, wouldn’t you? 😀

definitely. and i'm thinking so is kaci for team europe. the MC rankings are one year rankings right? and no euro has won a major since the ranking cutoff (international and uk open were won by asians) so 100k would put him on the top.

I think we all know Fedor will be a hall of famer when he’s eligible. I think prior to this he still needed a little more on his resume. After this, I think he’s cemented it.

A junior world championship, a very young world 9-ball championship, the adversity of a political ban, winning every non-sanctioned event across the US, notable achievements in 14.1, notable achievements in 1p, back to back DCC Master of the Table, World Pool Masters, and now the biggest World 9-ball Championship ever.

At this point he just needs to compete for 5+ more years and eventually turn 40. And this is a guy you expect to pick up a US Open, International Open, Buffalos 1P, World 10b, and/or MR Open along the way. Crazy.

Yes, Kaci was right to do what he did, but the World 10-ball has not featured the kinds of fields we've always gotten over the years at the World 9-ball. Kaci's resume won't be complete until he wins a World 9-ball. Of course, with his talent, he may not have to wait very long for it. Kaci's in the very top echelon of players now, and there is no reason to think he won't remain there.

Your daughter is the kind of fan we all appreciate. Thanks for sharing the story.

Not the greatest finish, but one of the most exciting matches we've seen in a final. It wasn't quite a) Wu coming to the table trailing 16-12 in the World 9-ball final and running out the set for the title, or b) Alcaide's long bank of the nine at double hill in the World Pool Masters final to beat Kazakis.

Pool has not become snooker. Matchroom has not ruined billiards. Saudi Arabia has not damaged the game. And the fans finally turned out!

What a tourney - and what a match. As good as any I have ever seen. The pressure was immense. The standard of play was stratospheric. The outcome had all the drama in the world.

Congrats to Fedor Gorst. He played like a man born and raised in the good ole USA. A ferocious competitor with a never-say-die attitude. Even when the chips were down, he never gave up. I wish all great American pool players did likewise.

It’s remarkable that Gorst won after skating on ice all week. Maybe he’s an Iceman, but he showed John Wayne True Grit.

And congrats to Eklent Kaci. If I had to pick a champion to play for my life, he might be it. What a rally. He fought like the wounded lion that he is.

I think Kaci played safe so much so early because of lack of trust in his bridge arm. But once he let that go, he capitalized on almost every Gorst error.

The two best players in the world in my view.

Thanks Matchroom. You are not perfect, but you are trying to be. And it’s the players and fans who are benefiting the most. Even if all the fans don’t realize it.

This event (and other recent Matchroom events) bodes very well for the coming years.

In 2017 I was lucky enough to be invited by sjm to a tourny at Steinway billiards.
This was the first time I saw Kaci play. Back then most of us were still mispronouncing his name.😄
Since then I have been enjoying watching his game. I like Fedor just as much so I am on the fence with this match.

This pic is of that day with Stu, my son and myself.View attachment 761997
I was there too and actually played vs Kaci 100$ race to 6 10-ball. I lost flip and was 0-5 down before i shoot. Ended up losing 3-6.
Kaci said he won almost 4K on 2 days. He said everyone want play with him xD
He was 1st time in U.S :) and just18 years old.

Haha I was here for this. Man I miss Steinway. Kaci used to gamble with the regulars there all the time, it was amazing to watch in person.

Great capture!
