It's true that Tim Scruggs was a machinist and it that's the reason he was hired to work for Joss. However, he learned how to build cues from Dan Janes

Scruggs made a fantastic playing cue, it's a shame he wasn't rewarded like some others, even after death his cues didn't increase in value, but that(I think) was mostly due to his not building extraordinary cues, even though they played fantastic! If only there

I’ve played with these intricate cues and they don’t feel lively. Like no spring in its step. It’s a hollow hit.

Full splice and Merry Widows are the best in my opinion. They are not ‘Swiss cheese’ to death.

Granted I live in the middle of nowhere when it comes to great pool halls and even better cue maker's so I've got limited experience but I've watched Earl Strickland play with a Mike Gulyassy cue and I was impressed enough that when I had the chance I purchased one and I'm glad I did , it may not be the fanciest but I feel my game has improved and my conference has improved also .

Even if Earl went with J. Flower 's I won't be trading off Mike's cue any time soon .

I'll say it again... Guido Orlandi in Michigan, makes some of the Best Playing cues on Planet Earth. His Conical Joint makes a 2-piece Cue, feel like a 1-piece Cue & his finish is flawless. I sold all of my fancy cues, to play with the MAGIC WAND he made me.,..

CNC means that a guy sits at a computer, draws a pretty picture, then goes down to the machine and pulls a fully made cue out, right?

Showman uses pantograph, per an article I read. Makes me wonder how he makes his panto patterns. Are they CNC cut or does he use a scroll saw?

I'm with you. The effort in making a cue is less about what tools are used than it is about understanding the construction and the tolerances necessary.

The only thing you need to know is JOHN SHOWMAN make the best old school and the best hitting Cue on The planet!

why would you complicate a playing cue with lots of inlays and things that could make it go wrong or even make it attractive to steal.
order a pretty one with lots of inlays and special add-ons, then hang it on the wall.

do you notice how most pros have simple looking cues compared to lesser players.

I thought this was going to be who is the best playing cue builder. On how they play pool. The best pool player to ever build cues is Mike Sigel. Current builders is probably Shawn Putnam or Bobby Hunter. Best cue repairman is Fedor Gorst. Although he only works on his own cues with his lathe as far as I know.

There have been some cuemakers that play very good...
Many mentioned here....
But I'll add Paul Mottey, Skip Weston, Fanelli, Pete Tascarella Sr.

I play with a Mobley that Earl sat in his shop for weeks. Cue plays fantastic and I'd asked T Harris to build me a similar cue months and years before. Lol. He said, it's my cue and I'm not doing it, I said, it's MY FUCKING CUE, do what I say lol. Love that guy

Like you I have owned and played with pretty much all the great cue makers cues (Searing, Showman, Tad, Gina, Tascarella, Southwest (both generations), Sugartree, EDC, Mobley, Cognoscenti, Omega, Kersenbrock, Joss West, Astle, Cohen, Gilbert, Vigus, Tucker, Carmeli....and several others that I am probably forgetting) and I have had merry widows that played great and extremely fancy cues that played great and a few that didn't feel that great.

Sugartree? I've never played with one but with all of the nightmare situations that have occurred over the years on this forum and other forums before AZ with people not getting their cues on time, not getting cues at all, deposits that disappeared and were never returned, calls never answered or returned, it's hard to imagine how Eric could be included in this list of names.
No cue regardless of how it feels or hits is worth going through the hell I've read about.
