Bathroom breaks at the U.S. Open

IMG_8737.jpeg

the match in question was between BJ Ussery and JJ.

from what I’ve read/heard:
JJ took 3 breaks and did his normal cue wiping very frequently. BJ thought he was sharking him and followed him to see if he was actually using the bathroom (which apparently he wasn’t).

Have any youtube matches of your games?
There's something floating around, but it's not my greatest. I became a much better player years later. There's one where Jean Balukas beat me in the finals 7-0. But she did make the 9 ball on the break 3 times. I did play well to make it to the finals, though, being that it was the biggest tournament of the year in Atlantic City. I had to get by some really tough players.

Not specifically talking about what happened at the Open but at the new location for the pool hall I play at they have the Billiard Channel playing, so I now see a lot of tournaments/matches and, IMO, nothing makes the game look worse than all the bathroom breaks -- dead time on the TV, and it's absurd that the players can't hold their water for the short duration of these matches!

I'm trying to think and have to ask: what other sports lets the adversaries (won't use the word "athletes") depart the playing area *repeatedly* to go pee?!

Make us look small time.

There aren't many sports that require the competitors to be there for three and a half hours. Golf qualifies but they gotta have pee stations around the course for all the old guys who play. Or is there a sand trap/litter box concept?

Most of the team sports have chances for any individual to have breaks as needed. Cyclists just pee on the road and soccer players have been known to pee on the field. Here you go:

So.... there are worse things pool players could do than jump up on the table when they win an event.

It’s not an issue between games and as long as nobody has to wait.

How many times you see these clowns go for a beer between matches or during. I find them getting a beer thing always seem to get a pass.

Which event are you talking about? I haven't seen a pro pool player drink alcohol at any major event (during a match) that I can remember.

And then there was the last time I saw Ronnie Allen play. It was in a small regional event (California Billiards when it was in Mountain View). He was drinking a pretty steady stream of beers during his match and delivering the result to the recycling room every few racks. He said he had a note from his doctor that due to his diabetes he needed the constant carbs to keep his blood sugar right.

Care to send me the link?

I love CA Billiards. 😂

Anyways the beer thing is pretty common in pro-am tournaments. The stepping away to fetch a beer seems to get a free pass.

I’ve seen Mika order pitchers for himself. 😂

As for smokers they don’t smoke till after the match.

I feel like whatever makes for the best production, Matchroom will figure it out. I’m sure the TV broadcasts were clean with actual commercials. DAZN shows the downtimes. I’ve heard hot mic logistics planning on DAZN with Matchroom before. But if it gets to the point it disappoints them in their presentation, the rules will change. But given how much behind the scenes we get with DAZN, I just give it some grace.

if you allow unlimited breaks the smokers will use them. i bet all of those so called abusing it were smokers. or going for drug use of some kind.

i can guarantee you that seeing the arena downtime is preferable to the commercials..

Should be allowed one per set. I don't care if you love smoking, doing drugs, or whatever. You can wait.

So, there was a previous kerfuffle in a 3-hour match when one of the players left for three breaks. I was thinking that he probably had violated the guidelines, but it is clear from the above post of the rules that he hadn't. It was even OK -- according to the rules -- that he hadn't actually gone to the bathroom, but maybe had smoked.
I didn't think either of those two smoked?

you're thinking of the wrong kerfuffle, hungarian. get your kerfuffles in order.

WPA Predator rule on timeout more draconian while Matchroom more liberal
WPA Predator only allow between sets
Couple of controversies at Predator Las Vegas Open this year cos of this silly straitjacket rule
Gorst and his opponent had to forfeit a rack so they could take break.
Capito had tummy issues penalised the set cos took break between racks https://forums.azbilliards.com/threads/dumbest-tournament-rule-ever.562457/page-2#post-7766142

Matt Edwards called out BJ :ROFLMAO:
