Bathroom breaks at the U.S. Open

There's something floating around, but it's not my greatest. I became a much better player years later. There's one where Jean Balukas beat me in the finals 7-0. But she did make the 9 ball on the break 3 times. I did play well to make it to the finals, though, being that it was the biggest tournament of the year in Atlantic City. I had to get by some really tough players.
I was there Fran, refereeing along with Pat Fleming. It was a surprise to see you in the finals, but from what I saw in the earlier rounds you were playing good, smart safeties and getting out with four or five balls left. Jeannie was something else. Nobody was beating her back then!

Which event are you talking about? I haven't seen a pro pool player drink alcohol at any major event (during a match) that I can remember.

And then there was the last time I saw Ronnie Allen play. It was in a small regional event (California Billiards when it was in Mountain View). He was drinking a pretty steady stream of beers during his match and delivering the result to the recycling room every few racks. He said he had a note from his doctor that due to his diabetes he needed the constant carbs to keep his blood sugar right.
Keith!

Dalton coached me getting ready for that event. I started out a little tentative and then got stronger each match. I actually went into the finals feeling like I could beat Jean with a little luck. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to fade 3 9's on the break in a race to 7 against someone like Jean.

Yeppers -- Keith.

I think there may even be an Accu-Stats match where you can see him swilling the suds during his match.

Her break was the weak part of her game. It was all arm. That is until she spent an hour with me and David Howard in Florida refining it. We taught her to use her whole body and move into it, karate style (it's in the legs and torso!). Now she had power (Jeannie was big and strong) behind her break and started making balls every time.

Oh Great. I have you to thank for her 3 9's on the break! LOL!

It's easily forgotten that on the TV table, the event was on live television in Europe, so there were scheduled commercial breaks every three racks in those matches.

On the outer tables, there were definitely some abuses, but when there is an area ref only, it is not so easily controlled. Agreed that it's a problem, but to be fair, the schedule was never badly compromised at this US Open, so I'm not sure it is a big problem.

I don't feel that match lengths got out of hand beyond day two of the event.

Him and Scotty Townsend. RIP Scotty

I was at an event where Scotty bet he would drink a hundred beers from Friday afternoon until Sunday afternoon when the tournament ended. I was there early Saturday night and he was close to eighty beers then. I suspect he made the hundred on an easy slide. Seen him toting a fifth or quart around drinking that complete bottle in a tournament too.

There is video of Jennie discreetly slipping Keith a beer several times during a match with Efren. Keith won, finishing up with an off handed shot. I think that match went hill-hill but I may be mistaken.

It is funny to look at old matches with people drinking and smoking. Just the way it was back then. I often drank a swallow or three of beer which led to wrong impressions. Never been a smoker.

People tend to forget these guys are humans too. Most people see them on streams. When the camera isn’t on them they are regular dudes. They can drink most under the table. 😂

If you’re a smoker then you may see them come out and join you.

They did start off from a pool hall afterall.

Fedor may break that mold. Admittedly a tournament only player. He’s at his best there. Not really a heads up gambling player. This from Rogan’s interview.

He doesn’t do drugs for those insinuating it. The players get drug tested. Rogan was trying to convince him to smoke weed and play. 😂
