Would this be a dream, dbl elimination Tournament.
Show up 11/Play begins at noon.
Every one plays at the same time each session.
Sessions last about 60 minutes.
If you get knocked in the losers bracket/your still in if not and you get dbl dipped, it's still daylight out.
No Hotels needed.
4 guys Split gas costs.
Saturday event Only.
Finals Dinner time.

Never happened in the history of pool

I've invented the game & format that will/does accomplish this.
The TD won't be there till closing time, and around 5 o'clock most all tables in the room are open for paying customers.

Tournaments never start on advertised time. Calcutta is the biggest time eating factor. Waiting for “known” players to show up always holds everyone up who arrived on time, allowing fields way too big for the number of room tables is also a huge time eater—- Tournaments are mostly about making money for the TD and a few select constant repeat players - my observation over 35+ years of attendance and participation.

True Mike, but I've removed all of that.
It's more of a customer/business tournament, allowing interaction with others and learning one anothers names, during match play.
Pool Doesn't Allow the contestants during play, to talk to one another poker does, pools NOT a social game during play.
It's not an event that the top players would enjoy at first because they Know they don't have the best of it.
It's an event... if you make it thru the 3rd or 4th Session, you now know/ at least 6-10 people you never knew ''by name''.

A tournament with the correct number of players for the amount of tables, run in a timely fashion, decent added money, scheduled matches so I don't have to wait around like a vagrant between matches.
This is the dream.
agree. No. of tables is KEY to the op's fantasy. If you've got 64, not a big event, you'd need 32 tables IF all matches started at same time. Not many places have that many. I like the 'idea' of this format but don't see it happening anytime soon. I've been at 32 man events that started at around noon and didn't end til early the next day if that. No. of tables was a factor but not the only one.

How many players are you talking?

My worst tournament experience was about 4 years ago here in Fl. Probably 50 players and only about 10 tables plus a long Drawn out Calcutta. I arrived at 9am after a 2 hour drive and did not play first match until 4pm!

So frustrated that I struggled to keep my head in the game - vowed never again to enter an event without complete pre event understanding of possible time frames involved — I.e. number of expected players, number of tables, Calcutta or not, race length, etc. etc.

Having to get a hotel room for one night doesn't bother me if the prize money is ok.
Like Mike said, start on time and end the day of matches by at least midnight. I'm not showing up at 9am to play from 4pm- 4 am.

Table room table count total X 4, if it's a larger room with more seating, that player number total can Easily increase with no effect on the Finals.

Think of this and your NOT a hard core pool player and you had NO clue their was a tournament going on.... your out with your date on a Sat night to play some pool and decide to go here, you get there around seven pm, the place is busy, but 99% or the rooms tables are available to rent. You and your date are then able to play pool, get a bite a few drinks and be in the mix of the final Table competition.

Well Bill this is how King Cobra talked a few years ago. We still haven't seen any Glue trnmnts. How about you just put one of yours on?

I will follow thru and let you know.
I've held 3 in the past.
The divorce put me out for too long, but gave me TIME to remove/test/think about, all the things I HATE about pool tournaments.
I never thought this possible but.... Something happened at one event, I've NEVER seen in ANY event.
The players cheered their opponents runout, knocking out the rest of their group.
Pool players don't EVER do this.
But the format allows the players to interact/learn each others names/ while hanging out/playing/competing.
Most pool events are steered only by $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and the local hot shots.
I don't charge as much to hold one and I get to go to bed Early on a Sat night.
If your room is within driving distance, I'll come.

Take any room, give me the table count.
Times that by 4.
If you have 30 tables.
120 players start at noon, finals with this head count start around 7- 8pm.
Every player still in each session, begin at the same time.
If you have a room owner that might be interested pm me.
I've learned in business, that the weekend people are the ones that ''pay the rent''.
This business model Never disrupts their pm business, EVER.
Only helps and also showcases the Final Table, where 8 players play for thee entire entry pot.
If you think about life, life in a pool room, it's allot about the game, but it's life/meeting others/hanging out/engaging and having FUN.
Life's always more enjoyable when you meet others that you like, enjoy what you do, you know their name and you've spent an hour or so with em playing pool??????

Best tournaments I've run are where you have exactly half the number of tables as players, and you do it round robin.
EVERYONE plays at the same time, the only waiting is for the slower matches to finish.
Round times can be fairly accurately predicted, and if you wanted to make it really accurate you could enforce a time limit. This format is the nuts if you want to get quality table time in at a tournament.
Large tournaments with limited tables are always going to be difficult to predict and run. They always take longer than you would think they should.

With four times as many players as tables you can have doubles matches. With random partner selection, that fits Bill's social mixing comments. With each round ending at the same time, you can swap all partners for each new round. If pairings are not according to win/loss, it is possible to have the schedule for everyone worked out beforehand so each person knows which table they'll be on and when for the whole day.

Round robins are good for people who want to get in a lot of play, but many tournaments have far more players than tables. With fewer tables you can do the mini-qualifier format I've explained before here. That also allows buy-backs and late arrivals. It keeps all of the tables busy, which is a must if you want to finish on time.
