I Wish Tip Makers Would...

Stop making them so tall/thick.

I don't know about anyone else's preference but I don't like 14 layers at the end of my cue, so when I'm ready to install a new tip, I cut off two or three layers right off the bat. And, I really don't like some of the new tips that have a black layer two thirds of the way down the tip -- those are non-starters in my book.

Usually I like G2 mediums, but I must have gotten a bad batch and have had several delaminate on me. After that, I like Kamui black SS but in my bag of tips I had none left, soooo, I found a couple of Moori SST I had bought somewhere along the way and, man, it is a super soft hit. It's compressed after a day's play and I'm interested in seeing how it goes but I think I like it.

Discuss amongst yourselves, compare and contrast, two hundred words by tomorrow as the Jesuits would say : -)

Agree that there shouldn't be a back ring only two thirds the way down the tip. A tall tip though, I like, because I think the more you play and wear the tip down, the better it plays. The thicker the tip, the more time it has to stabilize. Granted this plays more with the single layered tips, but I think it applies to the layered as well. Give me thick any time. I'd rather wear it over play that cut it down. Remember the good old French Champion tip? The thicker, the better.

Pay for you own custom height tips
Or continue to have them cut down
Don’t use the tips with the one black layer two thirds of the way down
Those are the options

Just sand off the bottom third.

Me, I'm happy with the LePros I got a decade or so back.

They are a bit tall. I play with Moori Soft and after a day or two of play they have compressed some and might even need a little side trim. After the tune up everything is perfect. It's a little like a new baseball glove. Looks great but needs some mattress and play to work it's best. Mind you I do my own tips but for those who can't/don't this might be a problem.

Only those who play with the hard stuff or don't mind a little sidewall overlap can get away with not retrimming the sides.

It’s probably just me but I feel a taller tip reduces my feel for what’s happening at impact on the CB.

LePros haven't really changed in thickness over the decades. And, the LePros of the 70s, I think were the best.

I liked the French Triumphs with the red pads… admittedly you had to cut the pad off and reglue it to reduce your rate of mid-match failure, lol.

Some (most) you got to trim several times.

I hate them, but I think the idea behind having them tall, is that they can be made to size.

Do most guys really like a tall tip?

When I think of all the pros I’ve played over the years I can’t think of a one that came to the table with a big honkin’ tip.

Lou Figueroa
would have
noticed that

No, but you can cut it to size. Which is easier to do. Starting tall gives more possibility.

Well sure, but why not start out shorter AND with a curved top instead of flat?

That’s the way tips used to come. I’m not sure 14 layers and a flat top is an impovement.

Lou Figueroa

because that is more limiting and caters to less people?

I ask again: is there any evidence more guys like an uber tall tip?

Or is everyone performing a bris and cutting off a lot of pig skin? I don’t see anyone except tyros coming to the table with tall tips.

Lou Figueroa

OK, so while I’m on a roll: WTFIW 14mm tips?!

More wasted pig skin that just ends up being cut off on the lathe. Who or how many guys are using 14mm shafts?!!

Nowadays 13mm will cover the spread.

Lou Figueroa
OK, I feel better now
