You're not getting it Lou, it caters to more people because you can cut it down to suit people like you, but you wouldn't be able to add more for people who want it taller.

You've missed the point with the 14mm tips, and for that matter, the 15mm. They come from the thicker hide of the animal, which is better suited for stability and wear-in. The best Triangle tips I've had are the 15mm variety.

None really, the point is it can be (and is supposed to be) shaped to your choice. Therefore, it can accommodate a wider bracket of customers.
Back in the 80s and 90s, there were some synthetic tips. May have been vegan, hard to tell.
Searing uses 15mm Triangles.
The reason has nothing to do with diameter. As Denis explained that the area of the hide where they can harvest 15mm is limited to a smaller and more consistent area(it’s much thicker than the smaller diameter tips) leading to less variance in the final tip when cut down to 12.5-13mm tips.
Denis is smarter than me and I’ll defer to him. And his tip work is about good as it gets with Triangle tips. (Bet nobody thought of that reason for 15mm tips).
I too prefer a thinner top when new. 3/32” to be precise which means there’s not much tip I’m starting with and they don’t last long. But for me that works best.
It’s damn near 50% of a 15mm tip. But it works well and I’ve used that for about 20 years.
Ofc the old le pro’s are great the red and black back with 2 holes

Because the thicker hide, the back, is the only part of the animal that can accommodate both thicker and wider. Otherwise, you're looking at thinner, softer parts of the animal, which do not make as good tips.
Yeah, I didn't say they were good, just that there were some back then. I don't think anything will take the place of leather, unless someone comes up with something really brilliant.

Well, I would guess says Tweeten, as their most desirable tips are the 15mm variety. Triangle for sure, and I believe LePro also. From experience, 13mm tips of any variety, tend to be very soft, useless.

Considering what they’ve done with their chalk lately I’m not so sure I’d invest too much in that opinion, lol.
And clearly the old 13mm tips weren’t great. My question is why Moori, Kamui, etc can’t come up with a new, thinner tip? Why do they have to be so thick if people are just cutting them down?
