What would you have done?

Foul, you know when you put it in the pocket or under the rail, it's there and if you have a ball coming for it you, you need to grab it quickly. If the ball went 3 rails and you are strong enough to force it 3 rails, you should be quick enough to grab that handle.

100%, I would never put my jump handle in the pocket in league or a tournament. And even if I did, I'd knock over a group of kindergarteners on a field trip to the pool hall and get to that handle before the OB ever came close to hitting it.

Foul...period. Steal $799...no crime, right? Why do we have rules only to let people off? Unless agreed upon prior, all rules stands as written. Uphold the integrity of the game, fairness to your teammates. That one incident has the potential of costing 5 trips to Vegas, a national championship and $15,000 or more. I once poured a bucket of water on my teammate in Vegas because he was drinking all night and wouldn't get up for an early match. He had an obligation to the team and I made sure he fulfilled it.

Call a foul, give him the rule number and move on. Otherwise, a bunch of watchers who only half know whats going on will think it is ok. and you deal with them later. It's ridiculous to have a set of rules to play by, and then not follow them
so which rule number is it then given BCA is "mostly cue ball" only fouls?

How good/experienced was the other player?

If we're talking a 550 with a lot of league/tournament experience I don't even blink at calling it and moving on,

But if he was that level of player he probably would've picked up the cue ball and handed it to you disgusted with himself.

A low 400's player who just executed his first successful jump, I cut him some slack. Explain and let him continue.

Of course, in playoffs or beyond, it's a foul and is called/played as such.

Regular BCA 9-ball league night:

Opponent against one of my teammates took out his break/jump cue to jump a ball. He broke down the stick, and put the bottom portion of the stick sticking up out of the corner pocket, near where he was standing. He executed the jump, got a good hit. OB went three rails around the table and into the pocket where he had placed the break/jump cue extension, touching it. The OB stayed down.

There was some debate on whether to call a foul. My position, in good sportsmanship, was to let him have it. We asked a highly respected very strong player (not on either my team nor our opponent's team that night) and he said he would let it go, but in a tournament, he would not. We ultimately gave it to him, let him continue shooting, with the understanding that it's not a good practice to put the extension in or on the table, lesson learned.

What would you have done?
Honestly, he's a dumb arse for not pulling out the handle in the pocket quickly. I mean he had the time of a three rail shot to pull it out. I say call a foul if the guy is a jerk. Let it slide if he's cool. Either way you have to crack on him big time for about 20 minutes.

It's like a ball hitting the bridge.

If you can't get your butt out of the pocket before a ball gets there on a jump shot why are you even playing pool?

Take the foul just on general principal.

Then three foul the perp.:D

I like the snooker point of view. ….it is the responsibility of the player to see that the table is in order on his turn….even if the ref made a mistake, it‘s the player who fouls.
I believe they have changed the rule so that if the ref has spotted a ball improperly, the player is not held accountable if he shoots while the ball is in the wrong place. I recall that it used to be on the player to make sure the table was proper.

Regular BCA 9-ball league night: I wouldn’t have done anything.

TBH, I doubt that I would do anything in a gambling match or tournament, either. I am 63 and have been playing for about 55 years. In my experiences, this is a non-issue.

in a cash game let it go. in a tournament which is a game of rules, its a foul .

if its a small league or local tournament why be a dickhead. let it go.

you start calling rules on players in a cash game that really haven't affected the outcome of the shot or game you will lose your customer quickly.

cash game you may not get paid or he will refuse to let you have the foul. and will lose your customer calling that.

in a cash game that isnt a foul anyway. the ball went in.
