What a treat to see them all again.

This is a real piece of pocket billiards history! Aired on ABC Wide World of Sports to very high TV viewership.

Arnaldo ~ No doubt it's been AZB-posted before, but new to my eyeballs when browsing YT and checking out this astonishing Chinese tenor who sings in five phonetically-memorized and perfectly pronounced Euro languages: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmig4oWkpxA ____________________________________________________________________________________

Fantastic. I knew both Lassiter and Boston Shorty, but didn't know them in their primes, and it's great to see them here. Even seeing Jim McKay of ABC Sports, one of the best sports journalists of all time, almost brought a tear to my eye.

Thanks for sharing.

I remember these Saturday afternoons at 4:30 watching WWS - McKay - and always the pool legends - early to late 1960s - everybody was into pool in my neighborhood

I think ABC did a reasonable job with the one pocket for a general audience and considering how much time they had. I wonder if it was ever broadcast again on national TV.

one pocket wasnt played too much back then for road players. few of them had more than the basics.
the ones that did became legends of it.

you can see how great lassiter was playing even out of his element.
i never saw shorty play well as he was also older, but did play 3 cushion good.

I seriously doubt that clip was ever broadcast by ABC again, as they had weekly events to do. The one I'd like to see on tape is Luther Lassiter vs Eddie Taylor in straight pool, which was broadcast by ABC in something like 1966. Drop pockets, I think it may have been in Vegas. Great match, and Luther won it. At the time, one of the best pool tapes, and apparently did not survive, not available, which is a shame.

All the best,
WW

I saw a replay of an older match played by Willie Mosconi in the early seventies. Took several years but it changed the way I played pool.

Just an aside about pockets. Most think the old players played on bigger pockets but that was just a passing thing to speed up the game. A little older I see references to four inch pockets being pretty common. Four inch pockets and ten foot tables, that is tough shooting!
