A contest that is staged primarily for entertainment value and does not result in any kind of internationally recognized ranking or record.
Why isn't Joshua Filler there? Albin Ouschan? Oscar Dominguez?
Nothing to disagree with here. It is my favorite event.
Again, why isn't Joshua Filler there? Albin Ouschan? Oscar Dominguez?
Nor would they be missing as much, and having to play safeties as much, if the pocket sizes were not such a joke. This is extremely short race 9 ball, I want to see some exhibition shots, not a bunch of tinking around with safeties. Slug it out! This isn't 10 ball, it is 9 ball. And it is pool, not snooker, the tight pockets are a crock.
By your definition events such as The World Pool Masters and The Masters in snooker would simply be exhibitions, yet both are considered 'Majors' in their respective disciplines and any player who wins one is considered to be top tier (I would also point out that broadcasters often comment on a player's Mosconi appearances and/or victories when discussing career highlights). However of course that is your opinion, so be it.
Filler isn't there clearly for some kind of contractual or PR issue, we don't know that 100%, but equally we kind of do.
Albin Ouschan is 17 in the rankings and behind everyone on the European team as well as players such as Wiktor Zielinski and Mario He (he also annoyed Matchroom of course, which may play a part).
Oscar is approx $1,000 ahead of Billy Thorpe in the rankings, you could argue therefore he deserves to be there, but as with The Ryder Cup and other similar events its not uncommon for a Wildcard pick to rank lower than some others, only the top x (depending on the competition rules) qualify by right.
The pockets are the same for everyone, Fedor has done pretty well on tight pockets in other events, I doubt he or anyone on the US side would suggest that is the reason for their performance.
That said, I do agree with you on the pocket sizes, pool isn't snooker and snookerising it doesn't really make sense, we have Chinese 8-Ball if we really wanted to watch pool on a snooker table. I would rather they were a bit bigger, 4.25 seems to be a sensible size to me (however to re-iterate, just because I think that would provide a better spectacle that doesn't make it a valid excuse for either side).
