Insurance is the opposite of gambling, it's security.
Not having insurance or being under-covered IS a gamble. Then you're betting nothing happens.
"Oh, that would never happen to me..." Sounds reckless and naive, no?
Then when something does happen you end up paying out of pocket or buried in debt. Or hang your family out to dry if we're talking life insurance.

On the main topic:
Gambling in the sense of money matches/etc is fine for those that want to do it and understand the risks.
However, gambling is ruining sports and especially fandom.
- Fantasy sports has people rooting against their own teams, which is bizarre to me.
- The need to gamble "to keep it interesting" just means you don't like the game for what it is.
- It introduces all kinds of negative impacts to the game beyond regular competition (fixing, interference, etc get worse)
- Say what you will about people making their own decisions, but gambling is addictive. It's bad for society as a whole to make it so easy for people to financially ruin themselves (and their families) from their phone.

The solution? I have not a damn clue.

Unless it is impacting me or my loved ones I am never going to tell somebody else how to run their life. A fool and his money are some party.

How could you gamble with someone that doesn't? This a trick question. REPORTED!!
 
insurance is just a gamble. but one most people choose to take. that is a personal choice but you still are making a gambling bet.

however if your gambling bet which you think is justified and it may well be. dont turn around and criticize someone for making some other kind of gambling bet.

The money for homeowners insurance or liability insurance means less to me than a total loss. Not as extreme as the lottery. But say I had a billion in cash and it was all I had. Most bets aren’t this extreme. I want homeowners and good liability insurance. I’ll pass on the extended warranty. Sometimes it’s just personal risk tolerance I guess. But other times I think the possibility of a catastrophic loss outweighs the math as far as lifestyle and real life consequences.

If you are playing on tough equipment and even if the player is a great shot maker and better rotation player I welcome it. I have a buddy that is right around a 700 Fargo but absolutely does not have the patience for 1pkt. I don't have a Fargo but I'd guess I'm below 600 (how much I don't know). I have zero chance beating him even, in rotation or 8ball. If we play 1pkt, by game 3 or 4 he losses his mind and gives me a big spot to switch to 9 ball.

Half of Americans are gambling in the biggest casino in existence, the US stock market via 401K plans. We are also gambling that social security will available for us after a lifetime of paying into it. Even billionaires are gambling that the US dollar will remain the world's reserve currency and banks will remain solvent (each account is only insured to $250,000). Practically no real guardrails exist for those that maintain our future.

You are probably gambling, your future, whether you like it or not.
 
(off topic) Gambling... Marrying someone you are not 100% sure of. Be sure to have back door insurance, good running shoes and a decent attorney. I'm betting things go South. I wish I had some backers on my first.😂😂

At the pool room last night, I didn't even gamble and still lost. Bought the best, but always broke, pool player a gosh darned quesadilla and a coke, gave him a ride home (or to wherever he is staying), plus he put the bite on me for 30 bux. Hey, I have a heart...what can I say. Offered to pay me back....please....keep the money. Hand to mouth ain't no life my friends.
 
I don’t gamble. I think the game should be less associated with gambling. However with golf the “dignified clean sport” there is far more gambling at the golf club down the road from me than in all the pool rooms in Houston metro combined and nobody thinks anything of it.
